For Urban Wage Earners +6.9%, Highest in 40 years, Most Monstrously Overstimulated Economy Ever.<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p><strong>Fed still printing money and repressing \u201creal\u201d interest rates to\u00a0<em>negative<\/em>\u00a06%, new vehicle prices spike by most since 1975, housing CPI jumps, food &amp; energy soar.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The broadest Consumer Price Index (CPI-U) spiked 0.9% in October from September, and by 6.2% from a year ago, the highest since November 1990 (6.3%) and since 1982, according to data released by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/cpi.nr0.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a>\u00a0today.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-75401\" src=\"https:\/\/wolfstreet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/US-CPI-2021-11-10-CPI-U-YOY-.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 517px) 100vw, 517px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wolfstreet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/US-CPI-2021-11-10-CPI-U-YOY-.png 517w, https:\/\/wolfstreet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/US-CPI-2021-11-10-CPI-U-YOY--260x203.png 260w, https:\/\/wolfstreet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/US-CPI-2021-11-10-CPI-U-YOY--160x125.png 160w\" alt=\"\" width=\"517\" height=\"403\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) spiked by 6.9% in October year-over-year, the highest since June 1982, nearly 40 years ago:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-75400\" src=\"https:\/\/wolfstreet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/US-CPI-2021-11-10-CPI-W-YoY.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 514px) 100vw, 514px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wolfstreet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/US-CPI-2021-11-10-CPI-W-YoY.png 514w, https:\/\/wolfstreet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/US-CPI-2021-11-10-CPI-W-YoY-260x199.png 260w, https:\/\/wolfstreet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/US-CPI-2021-11-10-CPI-W-YoY-160x123.png 160w\" alt=\"\" width=\"514\" height=\"394\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This CPI-W is the index upon which the Social Security COLAs are based, which are determined by the average during the third quarter. The Q3 average of 5.9% set t<a href=\"https:\/\/wolfstreet.com\/2021\/10\/13\/social-security-cola-for-2022-biggest-since-1982-but-wont-cover-cost-increases-for-many-retirees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he COLA for 2022 at 5.9%, the highest COLA since 1982<\/a>, and there was some jubilation among beneficiaries a month ago. But now inflation is blowing right past that COLA.<\/p>\n<p>As Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic pointed out, \u201ctransitory has become a dirty word.\u201d This massive inflation occurred while the Fed still had its foot fully on the accelerator \u2013 $120 billion a month in money printing and near-0% short-term interest rates, meaning \u201creal\u201d short-term rates are at\u00a0<em>negative<\/em>\u00a06.0%.<\/p>\n<p>The Fed has been saying over and over again ad nauseam for seven months that inflation will slow down somehow on its own, even as the Fed had the foot fully on the accelerator, and every step along the way, the Fed has grossly underestimated the surge of inflation, and continues to do so.
