But what if we ditched the data and embraced ancient technology instead?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"dcr-185kcx9\"><main class=\"dcr-koi18p\"><main class=\"dcr-krkkhw\"><\/p>\n<div id=\"maincontent\" class=\"dcr-j7ihvk\" tabindex=\"0\">\n<div class=\"article-body-commercial-selector article-body-viewer-selector  dcr-ucgxn1\">\n<p class=\"dcr-s23rjr\"><span class=\"dcr-114to15\"><span class=\"dcr-1jnp7wy\">E<\/span><\/span><span class=\"dcr-s23rjr\">ver since smartphones hooked us with their limitless possibilities and dopamine hits, mayors and city bureaucrats can\u2019t get enough of the notion of smart-washing their cities. It makes them sound dynamic and attractive to business. What\u2019s not to love about whizzkids streamlining your responsibilities for running services, optimising efficiency and keeping citizens safe into a bunch of fun apps?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-s23rjr\">There\u2019s no concrete definition of a smart city, but high-tech versions promise to use cameras and sensors to monitor everyone and everything, from bins to bridges, and use the resulting data to help the city run smoothly. One high-profile proposal by Google\u2019s sister company, Sidewalk Labs, to give 12 acres of Toronto a smart makeover is facing a massive backlash. In September, an independent report called the plans\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/cities\/2019\/sep\/11\/irrelevant-panel-pours-scorn-over-googles-ideas-for-toronto-smart-city\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">\u201cfrustratingly abstract\u201d<\/a>; in turn US tech investor Roger McNamee warned Google can\u2019t be trusted with such data, calling the project \u201csurveillance capitalism\u201d.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"dcr-1x8p67f\">\n<blockquote class=\"dcr-1u4hpl4\"><p>For many challenges, we don\u2019t need new technologies or new ideas<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<footer><strong><cite class=\"dcr-1irn6li\">Shoshanna Saxe<\/cite><\/strong><\/footer>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"dcr-s23rjr\">There are practical considerations, too, as Shoshanna Saxe of the University of Toronto has highlighted.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/cities\/smart-cities\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Smart cities<\/a>, she wrote in the New York Times in July, \u201cwill be exceedingly complex to manage, with all sorts of unpredictable vulnerabilities\u201d. Tech products age fast: what happens when the sensors fail?
