{"id":60165,"date":"2021-10-30T07:30:37","date_gmt":"2021-10-30T12:30:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=60165"},"modified":"2021-10-30T07:30:37","modified_gmt":"2021-10-30T12:30:37","slug":"the-climate-war-wont-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=60165","title":{"rendered":"The climate war won\u2019t work"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"post-cover-head\">\n<div class=\"single-post-thumb single-has-thumb\">\n<div class=\"post-cover-title\">\n<h3 class=\"name post-title entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/consciousnessofsheep.co.uk\/2021\/10\/26\/the-climate-war-wont-work\/?fbclid=IwAR16MZ_RYPFPaflutcBkzi1w0hk_mNzXsY-jyF3yP9VmCYTILZjz4jzwa60\">The climate war won\u2019t work<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content post-cover\">\n<article id=\"the-post\" class=\"post-listing post-6825 post type-post status-publish format-standard has-post-thumbnail  category-in-brief\">\n<div class=\"post-inner\">\n<div class=\"entry\">\n<p>There are, in fact, no human comparisons for the effort required to reverse the global-scale damage wrought by 300 years of industrial growth.\u00a0 Nevertheless, people still reach for past human endeavours to try to spur our political leaders to an action which, in truth, is far beyond them.\u00a0 How many times have we heard that tackling climate change requires an effort similar in scale to the Apollo moon landings or the Manhattan Project?\u00a0 And then there is the stubbornly undead comparison to the Second World War.\u00a0 Every time we think we have successfully driven a stake through the heart of this insane proposition, someone who has failed to understand what the war was\u00a0<em>really<\/em>\u00a0about, resurrects it and drafts it into service in the fight against climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Today it is everyone\u2019s favourite media environmentalist George Monbiot\u2019s turn\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2021\/oct\/20\/us-war-footing-1941-climate-emergency-earth-pearl-harbor?\">to suggest that<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe astonishing story of how the US entered the second world war should be on everyone\u2019s minds as Cop26 approaches.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6829 tie-appear\" src=\"https:\/\/consciousnessofsheep.co.uk\/files\/2021\/10\/Mobiot-WWII.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 922px) 100vw, 922px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/consciousnessofsheep.co.uk\/files\/2021\/10\/Mobiot-WWII.jpg 922w, https:\/\/consciousnessofsheep.co.uk\/files\/2021\/10\/Mobiot-WWII-300x177.jpg 300w, https:\/\/consciousnessofsheep.co.uk\/files\/2021\/10\/Mobiot-WWII-150x89.jpg 150w, https:\/\/consciousnessofsheep.co.uk\/files\/2021\/10\/Mobiot-WWII-768x453.jpg 768w\" alt=\"\" width=\"922\" height=\"544\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Monbiot gives a reasonable summary of the various measures taken by the Roosevelt Administration to mobilise the US economy for war in the wake of Pearl Harbour.\u00a0 Then he asks:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSo what stops the world from responding with the same decisive force to the greatest crisis humanity has ever faced? It\u2019s not a lack of money or capacity or technology. If anything, digitisation would make such a transformation quicker and easier. It\u2019s a problem that Roosevelt faced until Pearl Harbor: a lack of political will.
