Assange, despite being convicted of no crime, will have remained in Belmarsh Prison the entire time.<\/p>\n<p>During that time the judges will be weighing arguments they\u2019d heard about the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/2021\/10\/28\/chris-hedges-the-most-important-battle-for-press-freedom-in-our-time\/\">cruel nature of the US prison system<\/a>, which\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thedissenter.org\/us-incarceration-system-deemed-too\/\">formed a major part of the reasoning<\/a>\u00a0behind Judge Vanessa Baraitser\u2019s rejection of the US extradition request. They\u2019ll be considering the draconian policy of Special Administrative Measures, whose victims\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ccrjustice.org\/sams-report\">are cut off<\/a>\u00a0from human contact and from the outside world. They\u2019ll be considering the brutality of the supermax ADX facility in Florence, Colorado whose inmates are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sometimes-interesting.com\/adx-florence\/\">kept in solitary confinement<\/a>\u00a0for 23 hours a day, and\u00a0where Assange could easily wind up imprisoned despite the prosecution\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2021\/07\/the-us-diplomatic-assurances-are-inherently-unreliable-julian-assange-must-be-released\/\">flimsy assurances<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Assange probably never set out on this journey with the goal of calling attention to the abuses of the US prison system as his foremost priority, but, as is so often the case with anything his journey touches, those abuses keep getting pulled into the light of public awareness anyway.
