(Andrea Piacquadio\/Pexels)<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"pricat_name\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/facial-recognition-apps-for-home-quarantine-a-privacy-disaster-report_4043971.html?utm_source=partner&amp;utm_campaign=ZeroHedge\"><span style=\"color: #222222;\">Facial Recognition Apps for Home Quarantine a \u2018Privacy Disaster\u2019: Report<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<div class=\"author_date_tools\">\n<div class=\"tools\">\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"print\">A new report from the left-leaning Australia Institute\u2019s Centre for Responsible Technology has warned state-level governments to avoid crossing into \u201cnew frontiers\u201d of citizen surveillance following the increasing adoption of home quarantine apps in the country.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"post_content\">\n<p>Currently, South Australia, New South Wales, and Victoria are trialling such apps, which use geolocation and facial recognition technology to help monitor compliance with COVID-19 quarantine measures. For example, over 97,000 residents have already used Western Australia\u2019s home quarantine app, the G2G pass.<\/p>\n<p>The report called on state governments to \u201cregain the public\u2019s trust\u201d after police (in Queensland and Western Australia) were caught\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/wa-polices-access-to-covid-tracing-data-put-under-lock-and-key_3863978.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accessing data<\/a>\u00a0collected in COVID-19 contact tracing apps to assist in investigations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is important to learn the lessons of recent history and not allow moments of global crisis, like the pandemic, to reshape the way surveillance technology is used,\u201d Peter Lewis, director of the Centre for Responsible Technology, said in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/australiainstitute.org.au\/post\/facial-recognition-for-home-quarantine-is-a-recipe-for-privacy-disaster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a press release<\/a>\u00a0on Oct. 11.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty years ago, the world responded to 9\/11 and the threat of terror by forcing technology companies to access the search history of their users, something that had never been contemplated before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce this increased degree of surveillance was normalised, it was adopted by corporations like Google and Facebook to track users and to target ads, and by governments around the world to control their citizens.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3978022\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2021\/09\/02\/child-phone-1200x686.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy size-medium_vertical wp-image-3978022 ll-init ll-loadstarted ll-loaded\" src=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2021\/09\/02\/child-phone-612x350.jpg\" alt=\"Epoch Times Photo\" width=\"612\" height=\"350\" data-src=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2021\/09\/02\/child-phone-612x350.jpg\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A child uses an Apple smartphone in this undated file image (PA)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWhile it is important to get quarantine models right, the idea that facial recognition technology should be the primary monitoring tool for home quarantine should be treated with real scepticism,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Lewis called on governments to recognise the deficiencies in facial recognition technology and the risks it posed to privacy rights.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026click on the above link to read the rest of the article\u2026<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A woman looks at her phone.
