Natural gas is the key feedstock for the production of some of the most common artificial fertilizers, such as urea and ammonium nitrate, which farmers rely on to keep up Europe&#8217;s crop yields.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe increase of energy prices: This is the main reason for the increase in fertilizer prices, and of course it can impact food prices in the future, of course this is the risk,\u201d EU Agriculture Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski said on Monday during the EU Council\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/media\/52320\/agrifish-211011_12_background_final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">meeting<\/a>, where ministers from the 27 member countries gathered.<\/p>\n<p>EU farm ministers discussed a document circulated by the Polish government \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/api.politico.eu\/editorial_documents\/bf56f147-b8ac-478f-bced-0fc3f460c994\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">obtained by POLITICO<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 which predicted that the fertilizer crisis will trigger \u201csocial unrest\u201d across the entire European Union unless policymakers halt the soaring cost of natural gas. Warsaw blamed its traditional enemy Russia for the price surge, alleging the export giant Gazprom was restricting supply.
