{"id":59830,"date":"2021-10-11T15:35:55","date_gmt":"2021-10-11T20:35:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=59830"},"modified":"2021-10-11T15:35:55","modified_gmt":"2021-10-11T20:35:55","slug":"is-this-peak-gas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=59830","title":{"rendered":"Is this peak gas?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"post-cover-head\">\n<div class=\"single-post-thumb single-has-thumb\">\n<div class=\"post-cover-title\">\n<h3 class=\"name post-title entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/consciousnessofsheep.co.uk\/2021\/10\/11\/is-this-peak-gas\/?fbclid=IwAR1kWZOqqaE3z1FR2JvChjPwUMVkuaDdqCQJuIRXNoKtXTyF43QbvfcMg7I\">Is this peak gas?<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content post-cover\">\n<article id=\"the-post\" class=\"post-listing post-6795 post type-post status-publish format-standard has-post-thumbnail  category-energy\">\n<div class=\"post-inner\">\n<div class=\"entry\">\n<p>The recent, spectacular increase in the price of gas has created a sense of crisis not seen outside the financial sector since the early 1980s.\u00a0 In Europe in general and the UK in particular, it has begun to expose the folly of having an economy entirely dependent upon imports; including imports of the energy that powers everything we do.\u00a0 The conceit, of course, was that because we have gone much further than anyone else in deploying non-renewable renewable energy-harvesting technologies (NRREHTs) we were somehow\u00a0<em>less<\/em>\u00a0dependent on fossil fuels when events this week show that we are, in fact, more dependent than ever.<\/p>\n<p>The deeper crisis though, is economic because without\u00a0<em>growing<\/em>\u00a0energy we cannot have a growing economy.\u00a0 This is obscured to some extent by GDP figures which count the movement of bits in bank computers as real economic growth when in reality, they merely add a new mountain of unrepayable debt to an already massive mountain of unrepayable debt.\u00a0 In the real world where the rest of us live, nothing gets done unless there is sufficient\u00a0<em>surplus<\/em>\u00a0energy to power it.<\/p>\n<p>Setting aside for a moment the environmental imperative to cease polluting the planet, if it were possible to stabilise our fossil fuel consumption at 2019 levels, then\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/fossil-fuels#when-will-the-world-run-out-of-fossil-fuels\">we have<\/a>\u00a0some 50 years\u2019 worth of accessible (proven reserves) of oil; 53 years of gas; and 115 years of coal.\u00a0 But flatlining is something that only happens in recessions.\u00a0 In the economy that we have come to take for granted, year-on-year growth in energy consumption is the precondition for improvements in prosperity:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6542 tie-appear\" src=\"https:\/\/consciousnessofsheep.co.uk\/files\/2021\/04\/primary-energy-consumption-by-source-2019.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/consciousnessofsheep.co.uk\/files\/2021\/04\/primary-energy-consumption-by-source-2019.png 640w, https:\/\/consciousnessofsheep.co.uk\/files\/2021\/04\/primary-energy-consumption-by-source-2019-300x212.png 300w, https:\/\/consciousnessofsheep.co.uk\/files\/2021\/04\/primary-energy-consumption-by-source-2019-150x106.png 150w\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"452\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This suggests that we have far less than 50 years before we run out of oil and gas if we insist on continuing to grow the\u00a0<em>rate<\/em> at which we consume it&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u2026click on the above link to read the rest of the article\u2026<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Is this peak gas?
