While it is common for imports to vary from month to month there is a long term increasing trend. This is caused by diesel consumption on a continuing growth path while Australian refineries are shutting down.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11245\" src=\"http:\/\/crudeoilpeak.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/Australian_diesel_imports_by_country_2004-Jun-2021.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/>Fig 1: Diesel imports timeline \u2013 by country<\/p>\n<p>We see that under the increasing trend there are other structural changes taking place. Imports from Japan went down.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11246\" src=\"http:\/\/crudeoilpeak.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/Australian-diesel-imports-Japan_2017-Jun2021.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"472\" \/>Fig 2: Diesel imports from Japan dropped by 75%<\/p>\n<p>Japan\u2019s refining capacity and throughput is on a long-term decline<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11247\" src=\"http:\/\/crudeoilpeak.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/Japan-refining-1980-2020.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"591\" height=\"435\" \/>Fig 3: Japan\u2019s refining sector (sixth largest in world)<\/p>\n<p>The reasons for the reduction in oil demand are Japan\u2019s declining and aging population, high energy efficiency measures and an expanding fleet of hybrid and electric vehicles.
