P<\/strong>erhaps more than anything\u00a0else, the Pandora Papers \u2014 the\u00a0tranche of documents<\/a>\u00a0published Sunday night, which reveal the secret wealth of the world\u2019s rich and powerful \u2014 tell a story about Britain.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s the role, for instance, played by the British Virgin Islands, an overseas territory of the U.K. that functions as a tax haven. Czechia\u2019s multimillionaire prime minister used the territory<\/a>\u00a0to hide his ownership of a chateau in France. Others, including the family of\u00a0Kenyan President<\/a>\u00a0Uhuru Kenyatta and\u00a0Vladimir Putin\u2019s PR man<\/a>, have made similar use of the islands to conceal wealth \u2014 while Tony and Cherie Blair reportedly saved \u00a3312,000 in stamp duty when they\u00a0bought a London property<\/a>\u00a0from a company registered in the British Virgin Islands in 2017.<\/p>\n

Then there\u2019s London itself. The leaked documents show how the King of Jordan\u00a0squirrelled personal cash away<\/a>\u00a0in the capital\u2019s property market, as did\u00a0key allies of<\/a>\u00a0Imran Khan, Pakistan\u2019s president.<\/p>\n

More details will emerge in the coming days. But one thing is already clear. This isn\u2019t a story about countries on the periphery of the world economy. It is a story about how the British state drives a global system in which the richest extract wealth from the rest.<\/p>\n
