The reality is very different.<\/div>\n<div class=\"main_quote\">\n<div id=\"block-advertsquareone\">\n<div id=\"EcoloArticle2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-paragraphs field--type-entity-reference-revisions field--label-hidden field__items\">\n<div class=\"field__item\">\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--text paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-text field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>There has been\u00a0a surge in the number of mining projects and a massive expansion of areas under mining concession in the island of Ireland, Fennoscandia and across Europe in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>As much as 27 percent\u00a0of the Republic of Ireland and 25 percent\u00a0of Northern Ireland is\u00a0under mining concession, with a single company, Dalradian Resources, holding concessions for 10 percent\u00a0of the latter&#8217;s land area.<\/p>\n<p><em>Read YLNM&#8217;s new<a href=\"https:\/\/yestolifenotomining.org\/latest-news\/new-research-europes-extractive-frontiers\/\">\u00a0island of Ireland and Fennoscandia research dispatches now.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Nordic nations have issued mining exploration permits covering millions of hectares of land, including in Sapm\u00ed, the homeland of the S\u00e1mi Indigenous People.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Re-frame<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Up to 11 percent\u00a0of Finland\u2019s land area is under different types of concessions &#8211;\u00a02,122 km2\u00a0under active exploration and 25,361km2\u00a0under reservation, and more under exploration and reservation applications.<\/p>\n<p>In Norway, 6,698 km2\u00a0is currently under exploration and in Sweden 10,290 km2. Metal production in Finland and Sweden has increased substantially over the last 10 years.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/yestolifenotomining.org\/latest-news\/new-research-europes-extractive-frontiers\/\">Two new research dispatches<\/a>\u00a0from the campaign\u00a0organisation\u00a0Yes to Life, No to Mining Network (YLNM) explore how these nations &#8211; and the mining industry &#8211; are pursuing expansion.<\/p>\n<p>They are doing this by re-framing metal mining as a solution to climate change in order to facilitate domestic extraction of so-called \u2018strategic\u2019, \u2018critical\u2019 and \u2018transition\u2019 minerals required for renewable energy, transportation, military and digital technologies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field__item\">\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--quote paragraph--view-mode--with-advert\">\n<blockquote class=\"field field--name-field-text field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\"><p>The most pressing question isn\u2019t where new mining should happen.
