{"id":59410,"date":"2021-09-20T17:29:58","date_gmt":"2021-09-20T22:29:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=59410"},"modified":"2021-09-20T17:29:58","modified_gmt":"2021-09-20T22:29:58","slug":"wmo-horror-stories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=59410","title":{"rendered":"WMO horror stories"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"featured-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment-colormag-featured-image size-colormag-featured-image wp-post-image\" src=\"https:\/\/climatezone.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Wildfire-and-moonscape-800x445.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"445\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"article-content clearfix\">\n<header class=\"entry-header\">\n<h3 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/climatezone.org\/2020\/03\/wmo-horror-stories\/\">WMO horror stories<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content clearfix\">\n<p>If you\u2019re a fan of horror stories, the World Meteorological Organisation is not the first place you might think of checking out.\u00a0 But believe me, it is publishing some terrifying stuff.<\/p>\n<p>Every year the WMO publishes a report called \u201cStatement on the State of the Global Climate\u201d.\u00a0 These reports are quite different from those published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change\u2014the IPCC.\u00a0 The IPCC reports tread so carefully, they almost trip over themselves as they watch where to put their feet.\u00a0 This isn\u2019t really their fault.\u00a0 Their summary reports are airbrushed so thoroughly by their government handlers that even\u00a0 the most alarming observations of the hundreds of scientists who work on the text are weakened to the point where they seem to be little more than mild precautionary advice.<\/p>\n<p>Not so the WMO reports.\u00a0 They lay it out exactly as they see it.\u00a0 For the WMO, it is what it is. The latest report looks clear-eyed at the state of the global climate in 2019.\u00a0 Here \u2018s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/library.wmo.int\/doc_num.php?explnum_id=10211\">what they found<\/a>\u00a0:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The annual increases in the three main greenhouse gases were larger than the increases in the previous year, and above the 10-year averaged growth rates. In other words, the emissions that drive the changing climate are accelerating.<\/li>\n<li>As a result, 2019\u00a0 was very probably the second warmest year on record. \u00a0Global mean temperatures are already about 1.1\u00b0C above pre-industrial levels. So we are well on the way to going way past 1.5\u00b0C of warming\u2014a threshold that, once exceeded, the IPCC predicts will bring devastating environmental impacts.<\/li>\n<li>The past five years 2015 \u2013 2019 were the five warmest on record.
