Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez \u2013 A well-meaning but not particularly bright left-leaning US politician \u2013 made a stir earlier this week by wearing a figure-hugging dress emblazoned with the slogan \u201cTax the Rich\u201d to the prestigious 2021 Met Gala.\u00a0 Since the slogan was clearly political, it wasn\u2019t long before the various political tribes took to social media to pass judgement.<\/p>\n

\u201cHypocrisy!\u201d was the charge made by the libertarian right.\u00a0 As Amanda L Gordon at\u00a0Bloomberg<\/a><\/em>\u00a0explains:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe message itself wasn\u2019t surprising \u2014 Ocasio-Cortez has been one of the biggest supporters of raising taxes on the rich to help pay for more social services and narrowing the massive wealth gap between America\u2019s rich and poor. But the latest setting in which AOC \u2014 as she is known \u2014 chose to express it drew attention.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThe annual event at New York\u2019s Metropolitan Museum of Art is the haunt of celebrities, designers, billionaires and various other members of the jet set that are willing to pay $35,000 a pop for the privilege to attend.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

But, the left ask, \u201cwhere better to demand that the rich pay their fair share of taxes than in a gathering of the rich themselves?\u201d\u00a0 According to Hannah Selinger at the\u00a0Independent<\/a><\/em>, for example:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe truth is, women have always used clothing \u2014 the most accessible medium \u2014 to express their politics. One might say that such choices in the everyday sphere have been more subtle. Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s dress, of course, was anything but. And that was entirely appropriate for the space in which the statement was made.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Ocasio-Cortez has also\u00a0clarified<\/a>\u00a0that she did not pay $35,000 to attend and that the dress was borrowed for the evening:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe time is now for childcare, healthcare, and climate action for all. Tax the Rich.<\/em><\/p>\n
