Let\u2019s take a look at the \u201cclassic\u201d principles and we\u2019ll update them, Garden Professor style.<\/p>\n<p>Note: If you\u2019re growing food crops to supply your table not all of these principles will apply. Some will, e.g mulching, and some won\u2019t. Denver Water, the largest and oldest public water utility in Denver, Colorado, coined the term xeriscape in 1981 by combining \u201clandscape\u201d with the Greek prefix\u00a0<em>xero-<\/em>, meaning \u2018dry\u2019. The utility then began to formally define the main principles of xeriscaping for members of the Denver community interested in modifying gardening practices to save water. The results were the Seven Principles of Xeriscaping, listed below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE SEVEN PRINCIPLES OF XERISCAPING<\/strong><br \/>\n1. Sound landscape planning and design.<br \/>\n2. Limitation of turf\/lawn to appropriate, functional areas.<br \/>\n3. Use of water efficient plants.<br \/>\n4. Efficient irrigation.<br \/>\n5. Soil amendments.<br \/>\n6. Use of mulches.<br \/>\n7. Do some homework and choose plants that will be happy in your region.
