People who criticize billionaires for foolishly building underground bunkers believe they can survive the impending doom of\u00a0climate change<\/a>\u00a0by hunkering down on a homestead.<\/p>\n

Both groups are attempting to escape the realities of collapse. It\u2019s a race that most humans will likely lose. It\u2019s now a question of whether the species can survive extinction.<\/p>\n

On one hand the survivalists (rightfully<\/span>) poo-poo plans for colonizing Mars as too difficult on a \u201cdead planet\u201d while simultaneously clinging to the belief that for all their beans and bullets, gardens and wells \u2014the hoarded supplies of a prepper will see them through the\u00a0sixth mass extinction<\/a>\u00a0on a dying Earth. It\u2019s the poor-man\u2019s version of an Elysium space station.<\/p>\n

The cognitive dissonance must physically hurt.<\/p>\n

And let\u2019s admit what no one is saying out loud.\u00a0The carefully made plans for some sort of Neo-Thoreau lifestyle is more about surviving the collapse of civilization in relative safety and comfort than reducing a carbon footprint \u2014 the same attitude that put us in this predicament in the first place.<\/mark><\/p>\n

Here are just a few of the reasons this fantasy won\u2019t work.<\/p>\n
