{"id":59046,"date":"2021-08-19T07:23:26","date_gmt":"2021-08-19T12:23:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=59046"},"modified":"2021-08-19T07:23:26","modified_gmt":"2021-08-19T12:23:26","slug":"the-world-wont-buy-albertas-second-rate-coal-experts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=59046","title":{"rendered":"The World Won\u2019t Buy Alberta\u2019s Second-Rate Coal: Experts"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"article__header\" data-dev-object-descrip=\"organisms\/article\/article__header\" data-dev-status=\"IN-PROGRESS\">\n<div class=\"container-fluid\">\n<h3 data-bind=\"title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thetyee.ca\/News\/2021\/08\/10\/World-Wont-Buy-Second-Rate-Alberta-Coal\/\">The World Won\u2019t Buy Alberta\u2019s Second-Rate Coal: Experts<\/a><\/h3>\n<p data-bind=\"teaser\"><strong>What Kenney wants mined is such poor quality \u2018it won\u2019t make the cut\u2019 for global markets, panel told.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<section class=\"featured-media\" data-dev-object-descrip=\"02-organisms\/article\/featured-media\">\n<div class=\"container-fluid\">\n<figure class=\"figure \" data-dev-object-descrip=\"01-molecules\/blocks\/figure\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-img\" src=\"https:\/\/thetyee.ca\/News\/2021\/08\/09\/PileOfCoalRocks.jpeg\" alt=\"PileOfCoalRocks.jpeg\" width=\"960\" height=\"639\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption\">Alberta\u2019s proposed coking coal projects are often compared to the Elk Valley mine in BC, but the amounts and quality aren\u2019t at all the same, say two industry veterans.\u00a0<span class=\"caption__media--credit\">Photo via Wikimedia.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<article class=\"article__body main-col-container\" data-dev-object-descrip=\"organisms\/article\/article__body\" data-dev-status=\"IN-PROGRESS\">\n<div class=\"container-fluid clearfix \">\n<p>Half a dozen mining proposals to extract low-quality coking coal in the eastern slopes of the Rockies don\u2019t make any economic sense and shouldn\u2019t be allowed, say two Alberta coal experts with more than 70 years\u2019 experience in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>In separate written submissions to Alberta\u2019s Coal Policy Committee this summer, a retired geologist and a mining engineer testified that the market value of metallurgical coal seams in Alberta will never be able to compete with the quality of coking coals in B.C.\u2019s Elk Valley mined by Teck Resources.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese speculative mines don\u2019t meet the requirements to be viable by any economic analysis,\u201d said Cornelis Kolijn, a semi-retired process mining engineer with extensive experience in metallurgical coal, coke making and product development around the world over 40 years.<\/p>\n<p>The Kenney government reluctantly created Alberta\u2019s Coal Policy Committee after it initiated a political scandal by abruptly rescinding long-standing coal development rules in 2020 without public consultation.<\/p>\n<p>Those rules prevented mining in much of the eastern slopes, but Australian coal miners\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thetyee.ca\/News\/2021\/01\/29\/Months-Before-Albertans-Told-Coal-Policy-Australian-Miners-Knew\/\">learned of their removal<\/a> before Albertans did.<\/p>\n<p>Public outcry then\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/your.alberta.ca\/coal-policy-committee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">forced<\/a>\u00a0the government to reinstate its coal policy and create a five-member committee to investigate the future of coal mining in the eastern slopes.<\/p>\n<p>All summer long it has been hearing submissions from Albertans, First Nations, environmentalists, ranchers and Australian coal companies.
