(National Interagency Fire Center, Wikimedia Commons)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>T<\/strong>his summer, we\u2019ve seen the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/bootleg-fire-now-3rd-largest-wildfire-oregon-state\/story?id=78992147\">Bootleg fire<\/a>\u00a0rage through Oregon. East Coasters have been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/news\/article\/Massive-wildfires-in-US-West-bring-haze-to-East-16328497.php\">breathing West Coast smoke<\/a>. Massive floods have slammed towns from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/flooding-in-germany-europe-deaths-record-rainfall-western-europe-2021-07-16\/\">Germany<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abc7.com\/china-flooding-2021-subway-flood-zhengzhou-yihetan-dam\/10901291\/\">China<\/a>. The town of Lytton, British Columbia,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/07\/08\/americas\/canada-lytton-wildfire-climate-change-indigenous-intl-cmd\/index.html\">burned to the ground<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These disasters give a new sense of urgency to transition away from the fossil fuels that are causing this climate chaos. That\u2019s the good news. The bad news is that the movement fighting for this transition is running up against intense police repression \u2014 funded by private corporations as well as the federal government.<\/p>\n<p>I saw some of this firsthand.<\/p>\n<p>In June, I was one of the thousands who converged in Northern Minnesota for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nativenewsonline.net\/currents\/treaty-people-gathering-draws-thousands-pledges-for-summer-of-action-against-enbridge-line-3\">Treaty People Gathering<\/a>\u00a0to protest the Line 3 tar sands pipeline. Tar sands are one of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/canada\/en\/story\/3138\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-tar-sands-and-how-they-impact-you\/\">dirtiest and most carbon-intensive fuel sources<\/a>\u00a0on the planet. Unfortunately, these nonviolent protests have been brutally cracked down on. Over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2021\/07\/07\/line-3-pipeline-minnesota-counterinsurgency\/\">500 protestors<\/a>\u00a0have been arrested or issued citations so far.<\/p>\n<p>While I was there, demonstrators were hounded by a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2021\/06\/08\/line-3-pipeline-helicopter-dhs-protest\/\">Border Patrol helicopter<\/a>\u00a0flying close to the ground, kicking up dust and disorienting protestors.
