Greenwashing the Tokyo Olympic Games<\/a><\/h3>\n

\u201cThe gap between rhetoric and reality is a persistent one when looking at the sustainability of commitments of Olympic Games hosts\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Martin M\u00fcller,\u00a0European Urban and Regional Studies<\/a><\/em>, 2015<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The organisers of the Olympics have always been into appearances and grand theatre.\u00a0 And the International Olympic Committee has always been keen in keeping them up, from the barely credible notion of political neutrality to the now popular goal of carbon neutrality.\u00a0 In 2015, the IOC\u00a0decided<\/a>\u00a0to fully hop on the sustainability bandwagon, though it claimed to have been \u201can important topic for the IOC for many years\u201d.\u00a0 Indeed, in the 1990s, the body echoed the sentiments of the UN\u2019s sustainable development plan Agenda 21 by publishing\u00a0Olympic Movement\u2019s Agenda 21<\/a><\/em>, though that report displays, rather prominently, the company logo of the oil behemoth Shell.\u00a0 Sustainable development was,\u00a0according<\/a>\u00a0to the then IOC chief Juan Antonio Samaranch, \u201ctotally in conformity with the goal of Olympism, which is to place everywhere sport at the service of the harmonious development of man.\u201d<\/p>\n

In its Olympic Agenda 2020, the IOC\u00a0sets out recommendations<\/a>\u00a0for three \u201cspheres of responsibility\u201d. \u00a0The first: that the IOC adopt sustainability principles and include them \u201cin its day-to-day operations.\u201d\u00a0 The second: that the organisation \u201ctake a proactive and leadership role on sustainability and ensure that it is included in all aspects of the planning and staging\u201d of the games.\u00a0 The third, as being the \u201cleader of the Olympic Movement\u201d, the IOC will engage and assist the movement\u2019s \u201cstakeholders in integrating sustainability within their own organisations and operations.\u201d<\/p>\n

As with other organisations of scale, problematic strategies such as carbon offsetting are embraced.\u00a0Much is made<\/a> of making sure that such \u201cefforts\u201d are communicated both internally \u201cvia workshops or by circulating infographics\u201d and externally…<\/p>\n
