At the time, BC said fracked gas fit its climate action goals, but a new study doubles emissions estimates.\u00a0<span class=\"caption__media--credit\">Photo: BC government Flickr.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<article class=\"article__body main-col-container\" data-dev-object-descrip=\"organisms\/article\/article__body\" data-dev-status=\"IN-PROGRESS\">\n<div class=\"container-fluid clearfix \">\n<p class=\"lead-in\">Methane emissions from natural gas fracking in B.C. are about double what the government has assumed,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/10.1021\/acs.est.1c01572\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to a recent study initiated by the province and the BC Oil and Gas Commission.<\/p>\n<p>The discrepancy comes from the method used to detect emissions, say the report\u2019s authors. While the government and industry-led emissions studies typically gas imaging cameras to detect methane, the paper echoes a growing body of research challenging the method.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecent studies have shown that [optical gas imaging] cameras may not be as effective as originally thought,\u201d wrote the study\u2019s authors.<\/p>\n<p>In the first public study of its kind, researchers used aerial methane measurements \u2014 captured by flying over fracking sites and production facilities \u2014 to get a clearer picture of their climate impacts. They found significantly higher emissions from sites like production tanks, compressors and unlit gas flares than those being reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is rigorous research that the government and industry can\u2019t deny because they\u2019ve been involved in it,\u201d said Tom Green, climate solutions policy analyst at the David Suzuki Foundation. \u201cSo now we have a much better handle on what those emissions are, and how that\u2019s a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The research was supported by the BC Oil and Gas Methane Emissions Research Collaborative, a joint collaboration between industry, government non-profits and the Oil and Gas Commission, to support B.C.\u2019s emission targets.<\/p>\n<p>The findings have consequences for the climate \u2014 particularly given B.C.\u2019s plan to more than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.policyalternatives.ca\/sites\/default\/files\/uploads\/publications\/BC%20Office\/2020\/07\/ccpa-bc_BCs-Carbon-Conundrum_summary.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">triple<\/a>\u00a0its fracking activity by 2040 if the LNG Canada project comes online.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026click on the above link to read the rest of the article\u2026<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BC\u2019s Methane Emissions Are Double What Government Thought: Study The province\u2019s own research has found flaws in how natural gas was detected and measured.
