That\u2019s a big, dangerous mistake, say advocates.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<section class=\"featured-media\" data-dev-object-descrip=\"02-organisms\/article\/featured-media\">\n<div class=\"container-fluid\">\n<figure class=\"figure \" data-dev-object-descrip=\"01-molecules\/blocks\/figure\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-img\" src=\"https:\/\/thetyee.ca\/News\/2021\/06\/23\/SlashBurningSmoke.jpeg\" alt=\"SlashBurningSmoke.jpeg\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption\">Burning slash \u2014 the wood left unused during logging \u2014 produces more carbon emissions than BC\u2019s entire agricultural sector.\u00a0<span class=\"caption__media--credit\">Photo by Torrance Coste.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<article class=\"article__body main-col-container\" data-dev-object-descrip=\"organisms\/article\/article__body\" data-dev-status=\"IN-PROGRESS\">\n<div class=\"container-fluid clearfix \">\n<p>Here are two key words that have been largely left out of the broiling debate around British Columbia\u2019s old-growth forests: carbon emissions.<\/p>\n<p>Even in the recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/assets\/gov\/farming-natural-resources-and-industry\/forestry\/competitive-forest-industry\/modernizing_forestry_in_bc_report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">forest policy update<\/a>, the provincial government only mentioned carbon emissions twice. And that was to say forests suck up and store carbon, which environmental advocates warn doesn\u2019t tell the whole story.<\/p>\n<p>By B.C.\u2019s own reporting, forests are the largest emitters of greenhouse gases in the province \u2014 23 per cent larger than the total emissions from the energy sector.<\/p>\n<p>To talk about forests while ignoring carbon emissions is \u201cclimate denialism,\u201d says Torrance Coste, senior campaign director for the Wilderness Committee.<\/p>\n<p>When B.C. reports its official carbon emissions, that number excludes emissions from forests. Coste says that\u2019s a huge problem, because \u201cemissions associated with forests in some years surpass B.C.\u2019s total emissions. Which is staggering. It\u2019s like a second B.C. we don\u2019t count.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Coste says the province has a long history of siloing two ministries \u2014 the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, and the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development \u2014 and acting like they never overlap.<\/p>\n<p>The 2018 provincial climate change strategy,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cleanbc.gov.bc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CleanBC<\/a>, also skates around emissions from forests.<\/p>\n<p>But with the climate emergency it\u2019s urgent the two departments work together to tackle emissions from forests, Coste says.<\/p>\n<p>B.C. counts and reports its annual greenhouse gas emissions in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/environment\/climate-change\/data\/provincial-inventory%20%3Eprovincial%20inventory%3C\/a%3E%20that%20lists%20emissions%20dating%20back%20to%201990,%20with%202018%20as%20the%20most%20recent%20data%20year.%20%3C\/p%3E%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%3Cp%3EThis%20maps%20out%20all%20carbon%20dioxide%20sources%20in%20the%20province,%20from%20petroleum%20refining%20to%20wastewater%20treatment%20to%20vehicle%20use.%20When%20the%20province%20talks%20about%20its%20annual%20CO2%20emissions%20%E2%80%94%2067.9%20megatonnes%20in%202018%20%E2%80%94%20it%E2%80%99s%20based%20on%20this%20count.%3C\/p%3E%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%3Cp%3EBut%20almost%20all%20emissions%20from%20B.C.%E2%80%99s%20forests%20aren%E2%80%99t%20included%20in%20the%20%E2%80%9Cofficial%20inventory%20total%E2%80%9D%20and%20are%20instead%20listed%20under%20%E2%80%9Cforest%20management,%E2%80%9D%20which%20is%20not%20counted%20towards%20the%20official%20total.%20The%20forest%20management%20category%20includes%20forest%20growth%20that%20absorbs%20carbon%20minus%20emissions%20from%20decay,%20slash%20pile%20burning,%20wildfires%20and%20decomposition%20of%20harvested%20wood%20products.%3C\/p%3E%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%3Cp%3EIf%20a%20developer%20cuts%20down%20a%20forest%20to%20build%20a%20condo,%20or%20a%20forest%20is%20cut%20down%20so%20the%20land%20can%20be%20farmed,%20the%20related%20emissions%20are%20counted%20towards%20the%20province%E2%80%99s%20official%20total.%20%3C\/p%3E%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%3Cp%3EBut%20logging,%20where%20a%20forest%20can%20be%20clearcut%20and%20then%20replanted,%20gets%20listed%20under%20forest%20management%20%E2%80%94%20outside%20of%20the%20official%20total,%20according%20to%20the%20province%E2%80%99s%20%3Ca%20href=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">methodology book<\/a>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"aside \" data-dev-object-descrip=\"01-molecules\/blocks\/aside\" data-dev-status=\"IN-PROGRESS\">\n<section class=\"messaging-block messaging-block--ask\" data-dev-object-descrip=\"01-molecules\/blocks\/messaging-block--ask\" data-dev-status=\"IN-PROGRESS\">\u2026click on the above link to read the rest of the article\u2026<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Climate Disaster Hidden in BC\u2019s Forests The province doesn\u2019t count forest emissions in its global warming plan.
