Beware the term \u201cnet-zero emissions.\u201d<\/p>\n

A new Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives report is warning\u00a0net-zero climate goals<\/a>\u00a0distract from meaningful emissions reductions by muddying political accountability.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe problem with net-zero in Canada is that it\u2019s a really undefined term that gets thrown around a lot. A lot of people like it, and I did as well \u2014 it\u2019s got \u2018zero\u2019 in it, and we\u2019ve been calling for zero for a long time,\u201d says report author Marc Lee, a senior economist for the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut after I started exploring the \u2018net,\u2019 I saw a lot of loopholes for federal or provincial governments to try to perpetuate business as usual and not commit to the deep emissions reductions that we need to be making to be consistent with climate science,\u201d Lee said.<\/p>\n

The federal government has pledged to hit net-zero emissions by 2050, but its wording on what that means is vague. Its website\u00a0says<\/a> net zero means Canada\u2019s economy \u201ceither emits no greenhouse gas emissions or offsets its emissions, for example, through actions such as tree planting or employing technologies that can capture carbon before it is released into the air.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the 2020 election, the BC NDP said it would bring in legislation requiring\u00a0net-zero emissions by 2050<\/a>\u00a0but has yet to introduce a plan.<\/p>\n
