For those spared the ordeal of sifting through the\u00a0NATO summit communique<\/a>, here\u2019s the concise low down:\u00a0Russia is an \u201cacute threat\u201d and China is a \u201csystemic challenge\u201d.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

NATO, of course, are just a bunch of innocent kids building castles in a sandbox.<\/p>\n

Those were the days when Lord Hastings Lionel Ismay,\u00a0NATO\u2019s first secretary-general<\/a>, coined the trans-Atlantic purpose:\u00a0to \u201ckeep the Soviet Union out, the Americans in, and the Germans down.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The Raging Twenties remix reads like \u201ckeep the Americans in, the EU down and Russia-China contained\u201d.<\/p>\n

So the\u00a0North Atlantic<\/em>\u00a0(italics mine) organization has now relocated all across Eurasia, fighting what it describes as \u201cthreats from the East\u201d.\u00a0<\/strong>Well, that\u2019s a step beyond Afghanistan \u2013 the intersection of Central and South Asia \u2013 where NATO was unceremoniously humiliated by a bunch of Pashtuns with Kalashnikovs.<\/p>\n

Russia remains the top threat \u2013 mentioned 63 times in the communiqu\u00e9. Current top NATO chihuahua Jens Stoltenberg says NATO won\u2019t simply \u201cmirror\u201d Russia: it will de facto outspend it and surround it with multiple battle formations, as \u201cwe now have implemented the biggest reinforcements of our collective defense since the end of the Cold War\u201d.<\/p>\n

The communiqu\u00e9 is adamant: the only way for military spending is up. Context: the total \u201cdefense\u201d budget of the 30 NATO members will grow by 4.1% in 2021, reaching a staggering $1.049 trillion ($726 billion from the US, $323 billion from assorted allies).<\/p>\n

After all, \u201cthreats from the East\u201d abound.<\/strong>\u00a0From Russia, there are all those hypersonic weapons that baffle NATO generals; those large-scale exercises near the borders of NATO members; constant airspace violations; military integration with that \u201cdictator\u201d in Belarus.<\/p>\n
