\u2018Radical doomsayers\u2019<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"post-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.degrowth.info\/en\/2021\/06\/portrayals-of-degrowth-in-the-press\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-503186\" src=\"https:\/\/www.degrowth.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/PastedGraphic-1-620x260.jpg\" width=\"620\" height=\"260\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row-fluid\">\n<div class=\"span12 \">\n<p><i>In October 2020, I analysed press coverage of degrowth in Western European (English language) newspapers and magazines between January 2015 and October 2020.\u00a0 Using media theory concepts such as agenda setting and framing, my research explored how degrowth is being considered in the press, particularly as a potential response to climate change.<\/i><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*\u00a0 \u00a0 *\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0*<\/p>\n<p>Are you a fanatic, a fetishist or a member of a cult?\u00a0 If you are a supporter of degrowth, then you are likely to be portrayed that way in the press.\u00a0 My research found that degrowth is not yet on the media agenda, except in a very limited and mostly dismissive way.\u00a0 The English-language press is not informing the public thoughtfully of alternatives to our current political-economic system or the impact of unfettered growth on the planet.<\/p>\n<p>Greta Thunberg gave a stirring speech to the United Nations in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2019\/09\/23\/763452863\/transcript-greta-thunbergs-speech-at-the-u-n-climate-action-summit\">2019<\/a>, challenging the leaders of the world to think differently about their approach to climate change.\u00a0 In her direct style, she delivered a stinging rebuke of governments\u2019 emphasis on continuous economic growth, telling the gathering:\u00a0 \u201cWe are in the beginning of a mass extinction, and all you can talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thunberg echoes the degrowth movement \u2013 an increasing body of academics and activists, who argue that economic growth cannot be decoupled from increased greenhouse gas emissions.\u00a0 Instead, they advocate for degrowth as a potential solution to climate change.\u00a0 An\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.degrowth.info\/en\/open-letter\/\">open letter<\/a>\u00a0proposing putting degrowth principles at the root of a new economy attracted over 2,000 signatories and has been translated into 18 languages.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0921800916305900\">Academic interest<\/a>\u00a0in degrowth appears to have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.scot\/news\/18454903.mike-small-economic-chaos-looms-degrowth-future\/\">increased<\/a>\u00a0significantly in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026click on the
