At least one councillor says no.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<section class=\"featured-media\" data-dev-object-descrip=\"02-organisms\/article\/featured-media\">\n<div class=\"container-fluid\">\n<figure class=\"figure \" data-dev-object-descrip=\"01-molecules\/blocks\/figure\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-img\" src=\"https:\/\/thetyee.ca\/News\/2021\/06\/07\/GasStovePot.jpg\" alt=\"GasStovePot.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"536\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption\"><span class=\"caption__media--credit\">Photo by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/23119666@N03\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Bonica<\/a>, Creative Commons license\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/2.0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CC BY 2.0<\/a>.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<article class=\"article__body main-col-container\" data-dev-object-descrip=\"organisms\/article\/article__body\" data-dev-status=\"IN-PROGRESS\">\n<div class=\"container-fluid clearfix \">\n<p>A natural gas lobby group could delay action on a pillar of the City of Vancouver\u2019s Climate Emergency Action Plan this week.<\/p>\n<p>The plan currently requires all new homes to be built with zero-emissions heating and hot water systems starting Jan. 1, which could effectively ban natural gas hookups in new homes.<\/p>\n<p>But after the Canadian Institute of Plumbing and Heating sent a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.ymaws.com\/www.ciph.com\/resource\/resmgr\/weekly_update\/2021\/COV_letter_VanCityZeroEmissi.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">letter<\/a>\u00a0to the City of Vancouver saying the industry couldn\u2019t meet the January deadline and needed an additional one to two years, an amendment was added to the action plan that would delay the zero-emissions requirements by one year.<\/p>\n<p>City council will vote on the amendment Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian Institute of Plumbing and Heating is a non-profit association with 270 companies across the country who manufacture and distribute plumbing and heating products. In its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.ymaws.com\/www.ciph.com\/resource\/resmgr\/weekly_update\/2021\/attachment_COV_letter_VanCit.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">letter<\/a> the association said Vancouver should maintain its gas piping infrastructure for the eventual rollout of alternative fuel sources like hydrogen or renewable natural gas.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vancouver.ca\/files\/cov\/climate-emergency-action-plan-summary-2020-2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Climate Emergency Action Plan<\/a>\u00a0was first introduced in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>OneCity Vancouver Coun. Christine Boyle said that a one-year delay would punish climate leaders in the building industry and signal to the fossil fuel industry that the city is willing to cave on its climate goals \u201cwith a tiny bit of pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over half of Vancouver\u2019s greenhouse gas emissions come from burning natural gas for heat and hot water, according to the plan, so it\u2019s hugely important for old homes to be retrofitted with electric appliances and urgent that new buildings are built to be as close to zero-emissions as possible, Boyle says.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026click on the above link to read the rest of the article\u2026<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vancouver Council Pushed to Weaken Climate Emergency Plan An industry group wants the city to delay a deadline for shifting from natural gas in new homes.
