{"id":58004,"date":"2021-05-23T06:32:33","date_gmt":"2021-05-23T11:32:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=58004"},"modified":"2021-05-23T06:32:33","modified_gmt":"2021-05-23T11:32:33","slug":"seeing-through-the-seductions-of-science-and-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=58004","title":{"rendered":"Seeing through the seductions of science and technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header-outer\">\n<div class=\"entry-header\">\n<h3 class=\"post-title entry-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.permaculturenews.org\/2021\/04\/05\/seeing-through-the-seductions-of-science-and-technology\/\">Seeing through the seductions of science and technology<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content entry clearfix\">\n<p><i>The history books in our schools tell us that scientific and technological advancement have freed us from boredom, ignorance and oppression; from drudgery and repetition; from dirt, disease and malnutrition.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Let\u2019s briefly examine these assumptions about what \u201cprogress\u201d has achieved, and consider where we go from here.<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-US\"><strong>Freedom from boredom, ignorance, and oppression<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To be free from boredom, ignorance and oppression, first we condemn our children to approximately two decades of mind-numbing \u201ceducation\u201d during what should be the free-est years of their lives. (Education, depending on how it\u2019s conducted, can either be liberating or it can restrict children\u2019s thinking and experimentation to such an extent that most of them forget how to think for themselves<a class=\"sdendnoteanc\" href=\"https:\/\/www.permaculturenews.org\/2021\/04\/05\/seeing-through-the-seductions-of-science-and-technology\/#sdendnote1sym\" name=\"sdendnote1anc\"><sup>i<\/sup><\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSo long as our kids get the 3R\u2019s and plenty of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) drummed into them,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0we might think,\u00a0<em>\u201cthey won\u2019t be disadvantaged.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Next, we enshrine a screen in every home; even in every room of every home; even in the\u00a0<em>car<\/em>!
