{"id":57656,"date":"2021-05-04T06:15:22","date_gmt":"2021-05-04T11:15:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=57656"},"modified":"2021-05-04T06:15:22","modified_gmt":"2021-05-04T11:15:22","slug":"old-growth-forest-logging-approvals-are-soaring-in-bc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=57656","title":{"rendered":"Old-Growth Forest Logging Approvals Are Soaring in BC"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"article__header\" data-dev-object-descrip=\"organisms\/article\/article__header\" data-dev-status=\"IN-PROGRESS\">\n<div class=\"container-fluid\">\n<h3 data-bind=\"title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thetyee.ca\/News\/2021\/05\/03\/Old-Growth-Forest-Logging-Soaring-BC\/\">Old-Growth Forest Logging Approvals Are Soaring in BC<\/a><\/h3>\n<p data-bind=\"teaser\"><strong>Companies are rushing to get permits before protection comes for critical areas, advocates say.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<section class=\"featured-media\" data-dev-object-descrip=\"02-organisms\/article\/featured-media\">\n<div class=\"container-fluid\">\n<figure class=\"figure \" data-dev-object-descrip=\"01-molecules\/blocks\/figure\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-img\" src=\"https:\/\/thetyee.ca\/News\/2020\/09\/18\/RedCedarLogs.jpg\" alt=\"RedCedarLogs.jpg\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption\">In the year since the government received a report recommending increased old-growth protection, approvals jumped 43 per cent.\u00a0<span class=\"caption__media--credit\">Photo by TJ Watt, Ancient Forest Alliance.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<article class=\"article__body main-col-container\" data-dev-object-descrip=\"organisms\/article\/article__body\" data-dev-status=\"IN-PROGRESS\">\n<div class=\"container-fluid clearfix \">\n<p>New mapping released today by the Wilderness Committee indicates the province approved significantly more old-growth logging over the past 12 months than it did the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildernesscommittee.org\/news\/new-mapping-shows-huge-increase-old-growth-logging-year-after-old-growth-strategic-review\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">released<\/a>\u00a0today, the province approved logging in 84,669 hectares of old-growth forest over the past year compared with 59,228 hectares the year prior.<\/p>\n<p>Advocates speculate that the 43-per-cent increase could signal the forest industry\u2019s push to secure harvestable timber as the province promises tighter restrictions on old-growth logging.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reason we ran the comparison was because I was expecting a little bit of an increase, or at the very least a flatline,\u201d said Torrance Coste, national campaign director with the Wilderness Committee.<\/p>\n<p>Even then, Coste said he found the increase surprising.<\/p>\n<p>He said the decision to map cut-block approvals in old-growth forests was based on hearing concerns about the rate of logging from around the province.<\/p>\n<p>The organization said that based on mapping of publicly available government data in the year leading up to April 30, the old growth approved for logging over the past 12 months is equivalent to an area slightly larger than E.C. Manning Provincial Park.<\/p>\n<p>Coste said several factors could contribute to an increase in old-growth logging permits. An\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/agreement-accepted-union-steelworkers-1.5465594\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">eight-month strike<\/a>\u00a0by coastal forestry workers in 2020 and ongoing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.princegeorgecitizen.com\/local-news\/heres-a-timeline-of-all-the-recent-mill-curtailments-and-closures-in-bc-1600714\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mill closures and curtailments<\/a>\u00a0may have led to a decrease in permits in the prior year.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, he said the recent spike in lumber prices could contribute to an increase in logging.<\/p>\n<p>But he also speculates that the forest industry is preparing for additional restrictions on old-growth logging.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026click on the above link to read the rest of the article\u2026<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Old-Growth Forest Logging Approvals Are Soaring in BC Companies are rushing to get permits before protection comes for critical areas, advocates say.
