of pesticide pollution from the lingering residue of chemical ingredients that can leach into water supplies and threaten biodiversity, according to research published Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a class=\"textTag\" href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/use+of+pesticides\/\" rel=\"tag\">use of pesticides<\/a>\u00a0has soared globally as\u00a0<a class=\"textTag\" href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/agricultural+production\/\" rel=\"tag\">agricultural production<\/a>\u00a0has expanded, prompting growing fears over\u00a0<a class=\"textTag\" href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/environmental+damage\/\" rel=\"tag\">environmental damage<\/a>\u00a0and calls to cut hazardous chemical use.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers in Australia modelled pollution risk across 168 countries with data on the usage of 92 active pesticide ingredients and found &#8220;widespread global\u00a0<a class=\"textTag\" href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/pesticide+pollution\/\" rel=\"tag\">pesticide pollution<\/a>\u00a0risk&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>They highlighted several acutely vulnerable ecosystems in South Africa, China, India, Australia and Argentina, at the nexus of high pollution risk, high water scarcity and high biodiversity.<\/p>\n<p>The study, published in\u00a0<i>Nature Geoscience<\/i>, found that overall 64 percent of global\u00a0<a class=\"textTag\" href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/agricultural+land\/\" rel=\"tag\">agricultural land<\/a>\u00a0\u2014approximately 24.5 million square kilometres (9.4 million sq miles)\u2014was at risk of pesticide pollution from more than one active ingredient, and 31 percent is at high risk.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is significant because the potential pollution is widespread and some regions at risk also bear high biodiversity and suffer from water scarcity,&#8221;
