With Britain\u2019s big five banks investing \u00a366bn in fossil fuel extraction, campaigners believe pressure is building on banks to sell off toxic assets<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

At least 1,400 UK customers are set to\u00a0move their accounts in protest<\/a>\u00a0at their banks\u2019 multibillion-pound funding of the fossil fuel industry. The campaign, mirrored by actions in Australia and South Africa, is part of a\u00a0global day of action<\/a>by the\u00a0fast-growing fossil fuel divestment<\/a>\u00a0movement.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Go Fossil Free<\/a>\u00a0campaign has already persuaded 180 institutions, worth $50bn (\u00a333bn) and including local authorities, universities and churches, to sell off their investments in coal, oil and gas. The campaign will stage a series of protests on Saturday, with hundreds other events planned in more than 50 countries.<\/p>\n

A spokesman for the Move Your Money campaign, Fionn Travers-Smith, said: \u201cBritain\u2019s biggest banks have been using people\u2019s money to fund fossil fuels and climate change for too long, and the public simply don\u2019t want to support these socially and environmentally catastrophic industries.\u201d<\/p>\n
