Environmentalists give the progress so far a failing grade.<\/p>\n<p>One of the report\u2019s authors, Garry Merkel, captures the uncertainty when asked if there has been noticeable change. \u201c\u2018Yes\u2019 is the short answer, but \u2018no,\u2019 depending how you look at it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Merkel is a professional forester with 45 years of experience and a Tahltan Nation member. He and Al Gorley, a professional forester whose similarly wide experience includes a stint as chair of the B.C. Forest Practices Board,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/engage.gov.bc.ca\/oldgrowth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote<\/a>\u00a0<em>A New Future For Old Forests: A Strategic Review of How British Columbia Manages for Old Forests Within its Ancient Ecosystems<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/engage.gov.bc.ca\/app\/uploads\/sites\/563\/2020\/09\/STRATEGIC-REVIEW-20200430.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the report<\/a> they made 14 recommendations that would totally overhaul the management of old-growth forests, starting with grounding the system in a government-to-government framework involving both the provincial and Indigenous governments.<\/p>\n<p>Their second recommendation was to \u201cprioritize ecosystem health and resilience\u201d so that the health of forests comes first.
