The code seeks to\u00a0<strong>force major US-based internet companies to fairly pay local Australian publishers for use of their content<\/strong>. Last month Google threatened to remove its search engine from Australia altogether over the legislation, with Facebook backing Google&#8217;s pressure campaign.<\/p>\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered\"><iframe id=\"twitter-widget-0\" class=\"\" title=\"Twitter Tweet\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?dnt=false&amp;embedId=twitter-widget-0&amp;frame=false&amp;hideCard=false&amp;hideThread=false&amp;id=1362109514141556740&amp;lang=en&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.zerohedge.com%2Ftechnology%2Ffacebook-unleashes-nuclear-option-australia-blocks-all-news-sharing-across-continent&amp;siteScreenName=zerohedge&amp;theme=light&amp;widgetsVersion=889aa01%3A1612811843556&amp;width=550px\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-tweet-id=\"1362109514141556740\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div class=\"Advert_desktop__1J5vD Advert_tablet__3QEBr Advert_mobile__1rlLc Advert_borderTop__2PX5m Advert_placement__1I4yb\">\n<aside id=\"in-content-video\" class=\"\" data-google-query-id=\"CKaYpIe58-4CFSW_swodIlIAdg\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/21841313772\/zerohedge\/in_content_video_0__container__\">NBC describes\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/google-facebook-may-have-pay-news-australia-under-proposed-law-n1258000\">new code as aiming<\/a>\u00a0&#8220;to remove the digital giants&#8217; dominant bargaining positions by creating an arbitration panel with the power to make legally binding decisions on price.&#8221;<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;The panel would usually accept either the platform&#8217;s or the publisher&#8217;s best offer, and only rarely set a price in between,&#8221; the report describes.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook issued the following statement\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2021\/02\/changes-to-sharing-and-viewing-news-on-facebook-in-australia\/\">Wednesday afternoon<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aph.gov.au\/Parliamentary_Business\/Bills_Legislation\/Bills_Search_Results\/Result?bId=r6652\">response<\/a>\u00a0to Australia\u2019s proposed new Media Bargaining law,\u00a0<strong>Facebook will restrict\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2020\/08\/changes-to-facebooks-services-in-australia\/\">publishers and people in Australia<\/a>\u00a0from sharing or viewing Australian and international news content.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The proposed law fundamentally misunderstands the relationship between our platform and publishers who use it to share news content. It has left us facing a stark choice: attempt to comply with a law that ignores the realities of this relationship,\u00a0<strong>or stop allowing news content on our services in Australia.
