This was one of the proposed transformative paths of the\u00a0<em>Manifesto<\/em>\u00a0of the Mouvement qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois pour une d\u00e9croissance conviviale<a href=\"https:\/\/www.resilience.org\/stories\/2021-02-09\/material-challenges-of-bicycle-manufacturing-in-a-post-growth-world\/#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a>\u00a0and this notion also plays an important role in the reflections of the Degrowth.info group, based in Germany<a href=\"https:\/\/www.resilience.org\/stories\/2021-02-09\/material-challenges-of-bicycle-manufacturing-in-a-post-growth-world\/#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a>. The mainstream media also associate degrowth with cycling.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.resilience.org\/stories\/2021-02-09\/material-challenges-of-bicycle-manufacturing-in-a-post-growth-world\/#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Most degrowth advocates agree that the bicycle is a useful and desirable tool in a post-growth world, although some favour the promotion of walking.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.resilience.org\/stories\/2021-02-09\/material-challenges-of-bicycle-manufacturing-in-a-post-growth-world\/#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a>\u00a0One of the precursors of the philosophy of degrowth, Ivan Illich, describes the bicycle as the ecological machine par excellence:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The bicycle and the motor vehicle were invented by the same generation, but they are symbols of two opposing uses of modern advancement. [\u2026] It is a wonderful tool that takes full advantage of metabolic energy to speed up locomotion. On flat ground, the cyclist goes three or four times faster than the pedestrian, using five times less calories.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.resilience.org\/stories\/2021-02-09\/material-challenges-of-bicycle-manufacturing-in-a-post-growth-world\/#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\"><strong>[5]<\/strong><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>French engineer Philippe Bihouix, for his part, sees it as an example of a low-tech machine, despite the relative technical complexity involved in\u00a0 its manufacture. Even a simple model, he points out, contains several hundred technically complex basic parts, which are difficult to produce locally. The processes include metallurgy of alloys and different metals, the machining and fitting of parts, vulcanizing tire rubber, producing anti-corrosion paints, and grease for the chain.
