We\u2019ve all heard their rallying cry: eat local, buy local, support local. And it makes sense \u2014 buying local food might mean that we shop more seasonally, the food might be fresher, we get to develop relationships with the people who grow our food, and we get to support smaller producers \u2014 rather than the agribusiness conglomerates who put most of the food on supermarket shelves after it travels for hundreds, if not thousands, of miles to reach us. There\u2019s no denying that creating local food systems that run in parallel to the dominant, corporate food system can have many positive effects.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c790\" class=\"jt ju go jv b hl jw jx jy ho jz ka kb kc kd ke kf kg kh ki kj kk kl km kn ko cr ew\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">But we must examine local food movements in the West with more scrutiny if we truly wish to change the food system.<\/p>\n<p id=\"dd9f\" class=\"ky kz go av la lb lc hn ld le lf hq lg hr lh ht li hu lj hw lk hx ll hz lm ln ew\"><strong>What is the \u2018Local\u2019 in Local Food Movements?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"4bde\" class=\"jt ju go jv b hl lo jx jy ho lp ka kb kc lq ke kf kg lr ki kj kk ls km kn ko cr ew\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">A<a class=\"cx js\" href=\"https:\/\/community-wealth.org\/strategies\/panel\/urban-ag\/index.html#:~:text=A%20local%20food%20system%20is,health%20of%20a%20particular%20area.\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">\u00a0local food system<\/a>\u00a0is a \u201ccollaborative network that integrates sustainable food production, processing, distribution, consumption, and waste management in order to enhance the environmental, economic, and social health of a particular area.\u201d In essence, it is a smaller food system that often operates outside of the conventional system to have its own growers, markets, and consumers. But what does \u2018local\u2019 mean in this context?<\/p>\n<p id=\"ad24\" class=\"jt ju go jv b hl jw jx jy ho jz ka kb kc kd ke kf kg kh ki kj kk kl km kn ko cr ew\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">In its simplest form, \u2018local\u2019 is just a scale \u2014 it could be a recognized border, a neighborhood, a region, or another set of boundaries drawn to demarcate who is part of the system and who is not.
