They fanatically rejected the view of the Russian Federation repeatedly expressed by President Obama \u2014 that it is a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/national-security\/obama-dismisses-russia-as-regional-power-acting-out-of-weakness\/2014\/03\/25\/1e5a678e-b439-11e3-b899-20667de76985_story.html\">weak regional power<\/a>\u00a0with an economy smaller than Italy\u2019s capable of only threatening its neighbors but not the U.S. \u2014 and instead cast Moscow as a grave, even existential, threat to U.S. democracy, with its actions tantamount to the worst security breaches in U.S. history.<\/p>\n<p>This post-2016 mania culminated with prominent liberal politicians and journalists (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/john-mccain-russian-cyberattacks-an-act-of-war\/article\/2610654\">as well as John McCain<\/a>) declaring Russia\u2019s activities surrounding the 2016 to be an \u201cact of war\u201d which, many of them insisted, was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2018\/02\/19\/a-consensus-emerges-russia-committed-an-act-of-war-on-par-with-pearl-harbor-and-911-should-the-u-s-response-be-similar\/\">comparable to Pearl Harbor and the 9\/11 attack<\/a> \u2014 the two most traumatic attacks in modern U.S. history which both spawned years of savage and destructive war, among other things.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/cybersecurity\/322002-dem-senator-we-should-determine-if-russian-election-hacking-was-act-of\">repeatedly demanded<\/a>\u00a0that Russia\u2019s 2016 \u201cinterference\u201d be treated as \u201can act of war.\u201d Hillary Clinton\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/hillary-clinton-compares-russian-interference-in-2016-to-911-attacks\/2018\/10\/02\/6197a226-c674-11e8-9b1c-a90f1daae309_story.html\">described<\/a> Russian hacking as \u201ca cyber 9\/11.\u201d And here is Rep.
