Russell lives in Toronto and runs UNBC\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unbc.ca\/newsroom\/unbc-stories\/field-trip-introduces-participants-life-after-genocide-guatemala\">field courses<\/a>\u00a0in Guatemala with Nolin.<\/p>\n<p>Nolin and Russell co-edited\u00a0<em>Canadian Mining in the Aftermath of Genocides in Guatemala: The Violence, Corruption, and Impunity of Contemporary Predatory Mineral Exploitation<\/em>. Russell is also a founder and director of the advocacy group\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rightsaction.org\/who\">Rights Action<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The book had passed peer review and was ready last February for publication, but after several months delay Springer Nature notified them that after a legal review it had decided to cancel their contract and return the rights to the manuscript to them. It cited libel concerns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey didn\u2019t engage in any sort of tweaks,\u201d Russell said in a Zoom call. \u201cWe didn\u2019t think it would be five months of silence and then shut the door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Headquartered in Europe,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/group.springernature.com\/gp\/group\/about-us\">Springer Nature<\/a>\u00a0publishes thousands of titles a year according to its website, as well as journals including\u00a0<em>Nature<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA major theme addressed in the articles, testimonies and analysis that comprise our book is the endemic corruption and impunity with which the mining companies addressed in the book have, variously, been able to operate in Guatemala, with their Guatemalan economic and political partners,\u201d Nolin and Russell wrote in their letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026click on the above link to read the rest of the article\u2026<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Spiked.
