Keying off Tyee RCMP Revelations, MP Angus Wants an Investigation<\/a><\/h3>\n

Revelations in The Tyee\u2019s\u00a0recent report<\/a> on the RCMP\u2019s social media monitoring programs are \u201cvery concerning\u201d and deserve investigation, says NDP MP Charlie Angus, a member of the Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics committee.<\/p>\n

Angus said the Tyee report bolstered his sense that privacy laws may need changing to restrain police in how they use digital tools to spy on citizens.<\/p>\n

Angus said he will be calling for a probe by the federal watchdog Office of the Privacy Commissioner into issues raised by The Tyee\u2019s reporting.<\/p>\n

Internal documents show the force used national security exceptions to keep advanced monitoring software from the public and discussed unmasking private friends lists on Facebook.<\/p>\n

The Tyee also found the RCMP listed \u201cprivate communications\u201d and those related to \u201cprotests\u201d in its definition of encrypted \u201cDarknet\u201d sources it targets with surveillance software \u2014 some of which remain redacted in contract documents.<\/p>\n

Training documents for members of its Project Wide Awake web-spying program include a slide saying, \u201cYou have no privacy. Get over it,\u201d and a section headed \u201csocial media surveillance\u201d \u2014 a description the force previously disputed applies to its activities online.<\/p>\n

The Tyee published the report Monday based on 3,000 pages of internal documents obtained from an access to information filed a year and a half ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a real question about oversight with the RCMP,\u201d said Angus in response to the article. \u201cIf they were that fast and loose with so many basic principles of jurisprudence and justice, they could go much further. And that\u2019s what I find very concerning.<\/p>\n
