Maffick, the owner of In The Now, Soapbox and Waste-Ed, has filed a lawsuit against Facebook in a Northern California district court for defamation, intentional interference and violating section 43(a) of the Lanham Act, unjustly causing them economic and reputational harm, claiming that Facebook\u2019s actions represent unfair competitive practices.<\/p>\n<p>Go to any of the Maffick-owned Facebook pages, including In The Now (4.9 million followers), which focuses on light-hearted news and social justice issues, Soapbox (320,000 followers), featuring politically opinionated videos, or Waste-Ed (216,000 followers), with content on environmental topics, and you are greeted with a warning from Facebook: \u201cThis publisher is wholly or partially under the editorial control of a state.\u201d Maffick strenuously denies this, noting that its sole owner, Anissa Naouai, is a U.S. citizen living in California. \u201cIn doing all of these actions, Facebook has acted fraudulently, with actual malice and in reckless disregard for the truth,\u201d the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/470882213\/Maffick-Complaint-FINAL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">complaint<\/a>\u00a0alleges.<\/p>\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered\"><iframe id=\"twitter-widget-1\" class=\"\" title=\"Twitter Tweet\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/index.html?creatorScreenName=AlanRMacLeod&amp;dnt=true&amp;embedId=twitter-widget-1&amp;frame=false&amp;hideCard=false&amp;hideThread=false&amp;id=1288806591052079108&amp;lang=en&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mintpressnews.com%2Fpopular-viral-video-firm-sues-facebook-over-russian-propaganda-label%2F270442%2F&amp;siteScreenName=MintPressNews&amp;theme=light&amp;widgetsVersion=223fc1c4%3A1596143124634&amp;width=500px\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-tweet-id=\"1288806591052079108\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><em>MintPress<\/em>\u00a0reached out to Naouai for comment, but, for legal reasons, she was hesitant to speak about the case specifically. Rania Khalek, who makes videos for Soapbox, however, was far more forthcoming. \u201cFacebook has a list of criteria they came up with for what constitutes state-controlled media. We don\u2019t meet any of the criteria on that list. But they still labeled us that way.
