{"id":54578,"date":"2020-08-05T06:54:09","date_gmt":"2020-08-05T11:54:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=54578"},"modified":"2020-08-05T06:54:45","modified_gmt":"2020-08-05T11:54:45","slug":"as-trump-leaves-permian-oilfield-industry-insiders-question-if-2020-bust-marks-texas-oils-last-big-boom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=54578","title":{"rendered":"As Trump Leaves Permian Oilfield, Industry Insiders Question If 2020 Bust Marks Texas Oil&#8217;s Last Big Boom"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"page-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2020\/07\/30\/trump-leaves-texas-some-question-if-shale-bust-marks-permian-oilfield-s-final-boom\">As Trump Leaves Permian Oilfield, Industry Insiders Question If 2020 Bust Marks Texas Oil&#8217;s Last Big Boom<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/styles\/full_width_blog_image\/public\/blogimages\/052720_permian_571.jpg?itok=9h2qHAdi\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Yesterday, President Trump left Midland, Texas, after arriving in the state\u2019s Permian oilfield region for a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PatrickSvitek\/status\/1281091169842343936\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$2,800 a plate luncheon<\/a>&nbsp;and a \u201croundtable\u201d that required each participant to pony up&nbsp;$100,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The west Texas Mr. Trump left behind bears little resemblance to the region as it was when he first took office in January 2017, as the shale rush resumed following 2016\u2019s oil price&nbsp;plunge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, the shale boom of the 2010\u2019s is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/this-is-what-it-looks-like-when-a-texas-oil-boom-busts-11594440031\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">officially bust<\/a>, battered not only by the&nbsp;US\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5861697\/us-uk-failed-coronavirus-response\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">outsized failure<\/a>&nbsp;to control&nbsp;COVID-19 outbreaks and an oil price war in which foreign producers proved their ability to steer oil prices, but also a wave of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/12\/10\/chevron-expects-10-billion-11-billion-charge-in-fourth-quarter.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">multi-billion dollar<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/contrarianinvestor.net\/posts\/2019\/12\/20\/shell-suffers-pain-from-shale-revolution-and-revenue-issues-with-23-billion-write-down\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">write-downs<\/a>&nbsp;by oil giants \u2014 write-downs that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rigzone.com\/news\/is_chevrons_11b_writedown_an_oilpatch_warning-14-jan-2020-160788-article\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">predated<\/a>&nbsp;both the price war and the pandemic and resulted from the industry\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/06\/26\/us\/26gas.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">perpetual struggles<\/a>&nbsp;to generate profits from shale drilling and fracking&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/why-surging-oil-prices-dont-always-mean-big-profits-for-us-shale-producers-2018-05-17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">regardless<\/a>&nbsp;of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-06-28\/five-years-after-crude-s-collapse-shale-patch-still-struggles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the price<\/a>&nbsp;of&nbsp;oil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last Friday, just 103 active drilling rigs dotted Texas, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ycharts.com\/indicators\/texas_rotary_rigs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">data<\/a>&nbsp;from Baker Hughes. That\u2019s down from 403 drilling rigs as 2020 began and the state\u2019s peak this decade of 930. Just 251 active oil and gas rigs could be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/rigcount.bakerhughes.com\/rig-count-overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">found<\/a>&nbsp;across the entire United States, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-rigs-baker-hughes\/u-s-oil-gas-rig-count-falls-to-record-low-for-10th-week-baker-hughes-idUSKBN24B2L0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lowest number<\/a>&nbsp;recorded since Baker Hughes began tracking the rig count back in&nbsp;1940.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In late February, the nighttime horizons around Midland and Odessa were still dotted with brightly burning oil well flares, dozens of flickering licks of flame that cast an uncertain light across the mesquite and cotton fields of west Texas.
