{"id":54570,"date":"2020-08-04T08:46:19","date_gmt":"2020-08-04T13:46:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=54570"},"modified":"2020-08-04T08:46:41","modified_gmt":"2020-08-04T13:46:41","slug":"escape-to-mars-after-weve-trashed-the-earth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=54570","title":{"rendered":"Escape to Mars after we\u2019ve trashed the Earth?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"http:\/\/energyskeptic.com\/2020\/mars-is-not-going-to-save-us\/\">Escape to Mars after we\u2019ve trashed the Earth?<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/energyskeptic.com\/2016\/mars-is-not-going-to-save-us\/find-another-planet-climate-change\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/energyskeptic.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/find-another-planet-climate-change.jpg?resize=502%2C338\" alt=\"find-another-planet-climate-change\" class=\"wp-image-8197\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea that we can go to Mars is touted by NASA, Elon Musk, and so many others that this dream seems just around the corner.&nbsp; If we destroy our planet with climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss, soil erosion, aquifer depletion and more, no problem!&nbsp; We can go to Mars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though not if peak oil arrives,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/energyskeptic.com\/2020\/will-covid-19-delay-peak-oil\/\">which it may have in October 2018<\/a>, there won\u2019t be fuel to get there, and certainly none to return to Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But as Ugo Bardi points out in his book&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B00J39MTF8\/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&amp;btkr=1\">Extracted: How the Quest for Mineral Wealth Is Plundering the Planet<\/a>&nbsp;<strong>we already have gone to another planet by exploiting Earth so ruthlessly that we have changed our planet into another world.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe planet has been plundered to the utmost limit, and what we will be left with are only the ashes of a gigantic fire. We are leaving to our descendants a heavy legacy in terms of radioactive waste, heavy metals dispersed all over the planet, and greenhouse gases\u2014mainly CO2\u2014accumulated in the atmosphere and absorbed in the oceans.&nbsp;<\/em><em><strong>It appears that we found a way to travel to another planet without the need for building spaceships.<\/strong>&nbsp; It is not obvious that we\u2019ll like the place, but there is no way back; we\u2019ll have to adapt to the new conditions.
