{"id":54499,"date":"2020-07-31T17:39:52","date_gmt":"2020-07-31T22:39:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=54499"},"modified":"2020-07-31T17:40:22","modified_gmt":"2020-07-31T22:40:22","slug":"when-corporate-power-is-your-real-government-corporate-media-is-state-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=54499","title":{"rendered":"When Corporate Power Is Your Real Government, Corporate Media Is State Media"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/caitlinjohnstone.com\/2020\/07\/31\/when-corporate-power-is-your-real-government-corporate-media-is-state-media\/\">When Corporate Power Is Your Real Government, Corporate Media Is State\u00a0Media<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/caitlinjohnstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/medium-3-1.jpg?fit=1200%2C665&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The New York Times<\/em>&nbsp;published an&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/7l3KH\">astonishingly horrible article<\/a>&nbsp;the other day titled \u201cLatin America Is Facing a \u2018Decline of Democracy\u2019 Under the Pandemic\u201d accusing governments like Venezuela and Nicaragua of exploiting Covid-19 to quash opposition and oppress democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The article sources its jarringly propagandistic claims in multiple US government-funded narrative management operations like&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thinktankwatch.com\/2012\/07\/how-is-wilscon-center-funded.html\">the Wilson Center<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iefd.org\/articles\/trojan_horse.php\">National Endowment for Democracy<\/a>-sponsored&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sourcewatch.org\/index.php\/Freedom_House#Funding\">Freedom House<\/a>, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/carnegieendowment.org\/about\/development\/funders\">extensively plutocrat-funded<\/a>&nbsp;Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and the United States Naval Academy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crown jewel of this piece of State Department stenography reads as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cAdding to these challenges, democracy in Latin America has also lost a champion in the United States, which had played an important role in promoting democracy after the end of the Cold War by financing good governance programs and calling out authoritarian abuses.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whoa, nelly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe allowfullscreen=\"true\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/index.html?dnt=false&amp;embedId=twitter-widget-0&amp;frame=false&amp;hideCard=false&amp;hideThread=false&amp;id=1288972702716395526&amp;lang=en&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fcaitlinjohnstone.com%2F2020%2F07%2F31%2Fwhen-corporate-power-is-your-real-government-corporate-media-is-state-media%2F&amp;theme=light&amp;widgetsVersion=223fc1c4%3A1596143124634&amp;width=550px\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fact that America\u2019s most widely regarded newspaper feels perfectly comfortable making such a spectacularly in-your-face lie on behalf of the US government tells you everything you need to know about what the mass media in America really are and what they do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United States has never at any time been a champion of democracy in Latin America, before or since the Cold War. It has intervened\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.trtworld.com\/americas\/the-secret-history-of-us-interventions-in-latin-america-23586\">hundreds of times<\/a>\u00a0in the continent\u2019s affairs throughout history with everything from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@FeunFooPermaKra\/the-red-on-yellow-chiquitas-banana-colonialism-in-latin-america-1ca178af7616\">murderous corporate colonialism<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mondialisation.ca\/the-most-lethal-cia-interventions-in-latin-america\/5550400\">deadly CIA regime change operations<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telesurenglish.net\/multimedia\/US-Invasions-in-Latin-America-and-the-Caribbean-20160725-0017.html#\">overt military invasions<\/a>.
