{"id":54065,"date":"2020-07-10T10:30:54","date_gmt":"2020-07-10T15:30:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=54065"},"modified":"2020-07-10T10:30:58","modified_gmt":"2020-07-10T15:30:58","slug":"the-revelations-of-wikileaks-no-8-busting-the-myth-wikileaks-published-nothing-on-israel-syria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=54065","title":{"rendered":"THE REVELATIONS OF WIKILEAKS: No. 8\u2014Busting the Myth WikiLeaks Published Nothing on Israel &#038; Syria"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/2020\/07\/09\/the-revelations-of-wikileaks-no-8-busting-the-myth-wikileaks-published-nothing-on-israel-syria\/\">THE REVELATIONS OF WIKILEAKS: No. 8\u2014Busting the Myth WikiLeaks Published Nothing on Israel &amp; Syria<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>One myth about&nbsp;<em>WikiLeaks<\/em>&nbsp;is that it favors U.S. enemies and declines to publish documents against them, while another legend is that&nbsp;<em>WikiLeaks<\/em>, for obscure reasons, is soft on Israel, reports Patrick Lawrence.<\/strong><br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/p090313ps-01561.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1050\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/p090313ps-01561.jpg 1050w, https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/p090313ps-01561-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/p090313ps-01561-1000x667.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/p090313ps-01561-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/p090313ps-01561-160x107.jpg 160w\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Barack Obama meets with members of Congress to discuss Syria in the Cabinet Room of the White House, Sept. 3, 2013.&nbsp;(White House, Pete Souza)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A<\/strong>s&nbsp;<em>WikiLeaks<\/em>&nbsp;continued its document releases, and as major news organizations continued to publish fulsome accounts and analyses of these releases, the media\u2019s stance toward Julian Assange and his organization began to turn: What had begun as collegial collaboration was transformed into criticism and denigration \u2014 this in accordance with the hardening attitudes of the U.S. and allied governments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The key events in this shift were&nbsp;<em>WikiLeaks<\/em>\u2019 publication in October 2010 of \u201cIraq War Logs,\u201d comprised of 392,000 Army field reports, and, a month later, the phased publication of \u201cCablegate,\u201d a collection of 251,287 State Department emails. \u201cCablegate\u201d was the first major release of U.S. diplomatic traffic in&nbsp;<em>WikiLeaks<\/em>\u2019 \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/wikileaks.org\/plusd\/about\/\">Public Library of U.S. Diplomacy<\/a>.\u201d At writing, this continually expanding collection makes available more than 3 million documents spanning the 1966\u20132010 period.<a href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Julian_Assange_August_2014-1.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With these publications, along with \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/2019\/04\/23\/new-cn-series-the-revelations-of-wikileaks-no-1-the-video-that-put-assange-in-u-s-crosshairs\/\">Collateral Murder\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/consortiumnews.com\/2019\/05\/09\/the-revelations-of-wikileaks-no-2-the-leak-that-exposed-the-true-afghan-war\/\">Afghan War Diary<\/a>,\u201d&nbsp;released earlier in 2010,&nbsp;<em>WikiLeaks<\/em>&nbsp;penetrated more deeply into the citadels of official secrecy than it had since its founding in 2006. This new reality stunned the Obama administration and the national-security apparatus invisibly but formidably behind it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Official policy shifted. Washington began actively to pursue avenues through which Assange could be arrested, charged, and tried for one or another offense, however far-fetched, trivial, or unrelated to&nbsp;<em>WikiLeaks<\/em>\u2019 work.
