{"id":53965,"date":"2020-07-01T06:21:42","date_gmt":"2020-07-01T11:21:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=53965"},"modified":"2020-07-01T06:22:23","modified_gmt":"2020-07-01T11:22:23","slug":"why-the-us-empire-works-so-hard-to-control-the-international-narrative-about-russia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=53965","title":{"rendered":"Why The US Empire Works So Hard To Control The International Narrative About Russia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/caitlinjohnstone.com\/2020\/07\/01\/why-the-us-empire-works-so-hard-to-control-the-international-narrative-about-russia\/\">Why The US Empire Works So Hard To Control The International Narrative About Russia<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/caitlinjohnstone.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/medium.jpg?fit=1080%2C709&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On a December 2010 episode of Fox News\u2019&nbsp;<em>Freedom Watch<\/em>, John Bolton and the show\u2019s host Andrew Napolitano were&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/therightscoop.com\/the-great-debate-bolton-vs-napolitano-on-wikileaks\/\">debating about recent WikiLeaks publications<\/a>, and naturally the subject of government secrecy came up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow I want to make the case for secrecy in government when it comes to the conduct of national security affairs, and possibly for deception where that\u2019s appropriate,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MbVtROU9J_E\">Bolton said<\/a>. \u201cYou know Winston Churchill said during World War Two that in wartime truth is so important it should be surrounded by a bodyguard of lies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo you really believe that?\u201d asked an incredulous Napolitano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAbsolutely,\u201d Bolton replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou would lie in order to preserve the truth?\u201d asked&nbsp;Napolitano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf I had to say something I knew was false to protect American national security, I would do it,\u201d Bolton answered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy do people in the government think that the laws of society or the rules don\u2019t apply to them?\u201d Napolitano asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause they are not dealing in the civil society we live in under the Constitution,\u201d Bolton replied. \u201cThey are dealing in the anarchic environment internationally where different rules apply.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut you took an oath to uphold the Constitution, and the Constitution mandates certain openness and certain fairness,\u201d Napolitano protested. \u201cYou\u2019re willing to do away with that in order to attain a temporary military goal?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think as Justice Jackson said in a famous decision, the Constitution is not a suicide pact,\u201d Bolton said. \u201cAnd I think defending the United States from foreign threats does require actions that in a normal business environment in the United States we would find unprofessional.
