{"id":53635,"date":"2020-06-12T18:59:10","date_gmt":"2020-06-12T23:59:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=53635"},"modified":"2020-06-12T18:59:15","modified_gmt":"2020-06-12T23:59:15","slug":"covid-spreads-to-60-plants-sparks-fear-of-us-food-shortages-as-2nd-wave-strikes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=53635","title":{"rendered":"COVID Spreads To 60 Plants, Sparks Fear Of US Food Shortages As 2nd Wave Strikes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/health\/foodprocessorlivesmatter-covid-spreads-60-plants-sparks-fear-us-food-shortages\">COVID Spreads To 60 Plants, Sparks Fear Of US Food Shortages As 2nd Wave Strikes<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new report reveals&nbsp;the severity of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/geopolitical\/cdc-expects-200k-covid-19-deaths-october-dreaded-second-wave-arrives-live-updates\">COVID-19<\/a>&nbsp;<strong>spreading beyond meatpacking plants to food processing facilities<\/strong>&nbsp;across the US.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/news-and-analysis\/2020\/06\/covid-19-spreading-food-processing-facilities-across-us\">Environmental Working Group<\/a>&nbsp;(EWG) outlines this new reality of how the fast-spreading virus has&nbsp;<strong>infected 1,200 food processing workers at 60 plants<\/strong>&nbsp;from mid-March to early June.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To compile these statics, EWG reviewed news articles of outbreaks and noticed many of the infections were seen at&nbsp;Kraft Heinz, Birds Eye, Conagra, and the Campbell Soup Company&#8217;s Pepperidge Farm, as well as those of smaller plants, like Fairmont Foods and Ruiz Foods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Food Processing Plants With the Most Reported COVID-19 Cases<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/ewg%20plants.png?itok=TlmfUbsy\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bloomberg elaborated on&nbsp;EWG&#8217;s findings and said:&nbsp;&#8220;These are the&nbsp;<strong>first national numbers<\/strong>&nbsp;of their kind. The advocacy group compiled its figures using local&nbsp;media reports&nbsp;because there are no federal agencies reporting the data.&nbsp;<em>The&nbsp;<strong>true total is almost certainly higher.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bakers, dairy workers, fruit&nbsp;and vegetable packers, many of whom are&nbsp;deemed &#8220;essential&#8221; have worked through the pandemic, sometimes laboring in tight quarters.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;At our workplace, we were not ready for this virus. We didn&#8217;t talk about it. We didn&#8217;t know about it,&#8221; Paula Zambrano,61, who packs fruit at&nbsp;Borton &amp; Sons in Yakima, Washington. She was so concerned back in April of an outbreak at her plant that she stayed home for three weeks.&nbsp;Low on money, she returned to work to support her family.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;People are infected, and they come to work. They keep quiet about it,&#8221; Zambrano said. &#8220;We live from our work. We are surviving from our wages.
