Data Suggest Nations Do Go to War Over Oil\u00a0<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>The \u201cthirst for oil\u201d is often put forward as a near self-evident explanation behind military interventions in Libya, for instance, or Sudan. Oil, or the lack of oil, is also said to be behind the absence of intervention in Syria now and in Rwanda in 1994.<\/p>\n<p>This of course clashes with the rhetoric around intervention, or its stated goal. No world leader stands before the UN and says they\u2019re sending in the tanks because their country needs more oil. Such interventions are usually portrayed as serving directly non-economic goals such as preserving\u00a0<a id=\"itxthook0\" class=\"itxtnewhook itxthook\" href=\"http:\/\/www.livescience.com\/49643-crude-conspiracies-data-suggest-nations-do-go-to-war-over-oil.html#\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span id=\"itxthook0p\" class=\"itxtrst itxtrstspan itxtnowrap\"><span id=\"itxthook0w\" class=\"itxtrst itxtrstspan itxtnowrap itxtnewhookspan\">security<\/span><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"itxthook0icon\" class=\"itxtrst itxtrstimg itxthookicon\" src=\"http:\/\/images.intellitxt.com\/ast\/adTypes\/icon1.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/span><\/a>, supporting democratic values, or more generally promoting human rights.<\/p>\n<div id=\"nointelliTXT\" class=\"about_adsense\">\n<div id=\"ad_sense1\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/10518929\/tmn.ls\/culture_3__container__\">\n<p>But this is often met with scepticism and media claims that\u00a0<a id=\"itxthook1\" class=\"itxtnewhook itxthook\" href=\"http:\/\/www.livescience.com\/49643-crude-conspiracies-data-suggest-nations-do-go-to-war-over-oil.html#\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span id=\"itxthook1p\" class=\"itxtrst itxtrstspan itxtnowrap\"><span id=\"itxthook1w\" class=\"itxtrst itxtrstspan itxtnowrap itxtnewhookspan\">economic<\/span><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"itxthook1icon\" class=\"itxtrst itxtrstimg itxthookicon\" src=\"http:\/\/images.intellitxt.com\/ast\/adTypes\/icon1.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/span><\/a>incentives played a key role. Was Iraq really \u201call about oil\u201d? It\u2019s worth asking whether this viewpoint has some mileage, or if it is instead purely conspiracy theory.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a question we\u2019ve addressed in our research on the importance of oil production in attracting third party military interventions.
