The orders were expedited under a special authorization \u201cin response to Covid-19 outbreak.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The purchase orders include&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/beta.sam.gov\/awards\/89062523%2BAWARD?keywords=%09%2036C26220P0825%20&amp;sort=-relevance&amp;index=&amp;is_active=true&amp;page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">requests<\/a>&nbsp;for disposable cuffs, gas masks, ballistic helmets, and riot gloves, along with law enforcement protective&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/beta.sam.gov\/awards\/89176706%2BAWARD?keywords=%09%2036C24520P0413%20&amp;sort=-relevance&amp;index=&amp;is_active=true&amp;page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">equipment<\/a>&nbsp;for federal police assigned to protect Veterans Affairs facilities. The orders were expedited under a special authorization \u201cin response to Covid-19 outbreak.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Veterans Affairs department, which manages nearly 1,500 health care care facilities around the country, has also extended\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beta.sam.gov\/opp\/7ac628f175d94ac1a1c02525f1f0eddd\/view?naics=561612\">special contracts<\/a>\u00a0for coronavirus-related\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fcw.com\/articles\/2020\/03\/17\/federal-facilities-covid19-security.aspx\">security services<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Redcon Solutions Group, a private security company founded by Iraq War veterans, has won over&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/beta.sam.gov\/awards\/89799575%2BIDV?keywords=079635120&amp;sort=-modifiedDate&amp;index=&amp;is_active=true&amp;page=1\">$1.6 million<\/a>&nbsp;in contracts to provide guards for \u201cCovid-19 screening security guard services.\u201d Similar contracts have gone out to private security firms to guard VA facilities in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/beta.sam.gov\/awards\/89863394%2BAWARD?keywords=36C26120P0938&amp;sort=-relevance&amp;index=&amp;is_active=true&amp;page=1\">San Francisco<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/beta.sam.gov\/awards\/90040726%2BAWARD?keywords=36C26320N0699&amp;sort=-relevance&amp;index=&amp;is_active=true&amp;page=1\">Des Moines<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/beta.sam.gov\/awards\/89201383%2BIDV?keywords=36C24620D0065&amp;sort=-relevance&amp;index=&amp;is_active=true&amp;page=1\">Fayetteville<\/a>, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The increased security contracts appeared shortly after a recent Inspector General report&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/oig\/pubs\/VAOIG-20-02221-120.pdf\">noted&nbsp;<\/a>an increase in absenteeism among VA employees and shortages among VA police.
