{"id":52946,"date":"2020-05-02T07:25:58","date_gmt":"2020-05-02T12:25:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=52946"},"modified":"2020-05-02T07:26:02","modified_gmt":"2020-05-02T12:26:02","slug":"data-privacy-advocates-alarmed-by-nhss-new-contact-tracing-app","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=52946","title":{"rendered":"Data Privacy Advocates Alarmed By NHS&#8217;s New &#8216;Contact-Tracing&#8217; App"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/markets\/data-privacy-advocates-alarmed-nhss-new-contact-tracing-app\">Data Privacy Advocates Alarmed By NHS&#8217;s New &#8216;Contact-Tracing&#8217; App<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As both countries prepare to start unwinding the strict nationwide lockdowns imposed more than 6 weeks ago, the UK and France are collaborating on a new &#8216;voluntary&#8217; surveillance app purportedly designed to help with &#8216;contact tracing&#8217; for coronavirus patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/health\/nhs-works-with-french-to-develop-contact-tracing-app-a4429146.html\">Evening Standard<\/a>&nbsp;reports ministers from both countries have been &#8220;liaising&#8221; on the development of the new technology, which is expected to be ready within two or three weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/Screen%20Shot%202020-05-01%20at%207.35.47%20AM.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But why are the two allies collaborating on building their own &#8216;surveillance&#8217; app instead of adopting a model proposed by Apple or Google? Well, apparently, British officials felt Apple&#8217;s treatment of user privacy was &#8220;too cautious&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The app will use bluetooth to collect data from the phones of everybody one passes; should one of them test positive, a user will be notified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>A consultant to the French government said:&nbsp;<strong>&#8220;Apple appeared to be much more cautious about protecting client data and privacy than the French or British authorities.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p><p>The smartphone app will track and trace any possibly affected persons near the user.
