{"id":52556,"date":"2020-04-16T06:26:18","date_gmt":"2020-04-16T11:26:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=52556"},"modified":"2020-04-16T06:26:22","modified_gmt":"2020-04-16T11:26:22","slug":"canadian-meat-industry-warns-of-immediate-and-drastic-impact-to-supply","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=52556","title":{"rendered":"Canadian Meat Industry Warns Of &#8220;Immediate And Drastic&#8221; Impact To Supply"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/health\/canadian-meat-industry-warns-immediate-and-drastic-impact-supply\">Canadian Meat Industry Warns Of &#8220;Immediate And Drastic&#8221; Impact To Supply<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have been covering the impact of coronavirus on meat processing facilities in the U.S.&nbsp;<strong>and now it looks as though Canada is feeling the shockwaves as well.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The country&#8217;s supply chain could come under pressure&nbsp;as industry leaders in Canada have warned of &#8220;immediate and drastic&#8221; effects from the closures of key North American meat processing facilities, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/health\/coronavirus\/covid-19-to-have-immediate-and-drastic-impact-on-canadian-meat-supply-industry-group-1.4894557\">CTV<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And in Canada, a number of facilities have been reduced, including one Cargill plant in Alberta where dozens of employees have tested positive for coronavirus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Michelle McMullen, communications manager at the Canadian Cattlemen\u2019s Association, said:\u00a0<strong>&#8220;This single facility represents just over one-third of Canada\u2019s total processing capability, so the impacts to the Canadian beef industry are expected to be immediate and drastic.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/canada%20eh.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CCA president Bob Lowe&nbsp;said North American production has been &#8220;severely limited&#8221; and has called on the Canadian government to implement measures to help out Canadian farmers.&nbsp;<strong>\u201cThe Canadian beef industry is facing a period of extraordinary uncertainty,\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He continued:&nbsp;\u201cExisting programs do not address the particular threats we are facing and in fact fall quite short. These are challenging times for all Canadians; it is together that we can implement solutions to ensure healthy and affordable food continues to be readily available.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recall, just yesterday&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/health\/perilously-close-meat-shortfalls-worlds-largest-pork-producer-shutters-key-factory-after\">we wrote<\/a>&nbsp;about the biggest pork producer in the U.S., Smithfield, who shuttered one of its largest factories after a coronavirus outbreak.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smithfield also issued a warning of its own, stating that meat supplies are &#8220;perilously close to the edge of shortfalls&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company shut down its Sioux Falls, SD plant, which accounts for 4% to 5% of U.S. production.
