There Are Far Fewer Terror Attacks Now Than In the 1970s<\/a><\/h3>\n

Putting the Terror Threat In Perspective<\/strong><\/p>\n

The terror threat is greatly exaggerated. After all, the type of\u00a0counter-terror experts who frequently appear on the mainstream news<\/a>\u00a0are motivated to\u00a0hype the terror threat<\/a>, because it\u00a0drums\u00a0<\/a>up<\/a>\u00a0business<\/a>\u00a0 for them.<\/p>\n

The same is true for government employees.\u00a0 As former FBI assistant director Thomas Fuentes\u00a0put it<\/a>last week:<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re submitting budget proposals for a law enforcement agency, for an intelligence agency, you\u2019re not going to submit the proposal that \u201cWe won the war on terror and everything\u2019s great,\u201d cuz the first thing that\u2019s gonna happen is your budget\u2019s gonna be cut in half.<\/p>\n

You know, it\u2019s my opposite of Jesse Jackson\u2019s \u201cKeep Hope Alive\u201d\u2014it\u2019s \u201cKeep Fear Alive.\u201d Keep it alive.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Fearmongering also serves political goals. For example,\u00a0FBI agents and CIA intelligence officials, a top constitutional and military law expert, Time magazine, the Washington Post and others<\/a>\u00a0have all said that U.S. government officials \u201cwere trying to create an atmosphere of fear in which the American people would give them more power\u201d.\u00a0 Indeed, the former Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridgeadmitted<\/em><\/a><\/strong>\u00a0that he was pressured to raise terror alerts to help Bush win reelection.\u00a0 Former U.S. National Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski \u2013 also a top foreign policy advisor to President Obama \u2013 told the Senate that the war on terror is a\u00a0\u201ca mythical historical narrative\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n
