Despite Denials, RCMP Used Facial Recognition Program for 18 Years<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Despite denials, the RCMP has been routinely using facial recognition technology since 2002, The Tyee has learned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the software continues to be used in British Columbia, the RCMP confirmed Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attention has been focused on the RCMP\u2019s use of Clearview AI\u2019s<\/a>controversial facial recognition software, which uses a database of billions of images scraped from social media. The technology allows police forces \u2014 and individuals and companies \u2014 to upload a photo and see any matching images on the web, along with links to where they appeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But The Tyee has learned the RCMP has been using facial recognition software for 18 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Computerized Arrest and Booking System (CABS) has been in use at the RCMP for many years,\u201d spokesperson Catherine Fortin said in a written response to emailed questions. \u201cCurrently, it is only being used by the RCMP in B.C.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The technology is used to store and compare faces of \u201ccharged persons\u201d and to create photo lineups, said Fortin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the RCMP bought the system, the supplier said<\/a> it provided \u201cincreased efficiency of surveillance and investigation activities\u201d and \u201cthe ability to identify an individual within very large databases of images in seconds.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The RCMP did not respond to a question about how the use of the software could be reconciled with its previous claims it was not using facial recognition technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In July 2019, the RCMP told The Tyee it was not using such software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
