{"id":51574,"date":"2020-03-05T08:24:27","date_gmt":"2020-03-05T13:24:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=51574"},"modified":"2020-03-05T08:25:07","modified_gmt":"2020-03-05T13:25:07","slug":"opec-agrees-to-1-5mm-barrel-output-cut-but-fails-to-obtain-critical-russian-backing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=51574","title":{"rendered":"OPEC Agrees To 1.5MM Barrel Output Cut, But Fails To Obtain Critical Russian Backing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/markets\/opec-agrees-15mm-barrel-output-cut-fails-woo-russia\">OPEC Agrees To 1.5MM Barrel Output Cut, But Fails To Obtain Critical Russian Backing<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Today&#8217;s OPEC meeting has been more of a stunt by members to persuade Russia to agree to deep cuts amid a demand shock triggered by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/geopolitical\/new-jersey-reports-1st-case-switzerland-reports-1st-death-global-coronavirus-cases\">Covid-19<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ministers from OPEC agreed on a large cut of 1.5 million barrels per day in the second quarter to support prices but made it conditional on Russia joining in,<\/strong>&nbsp;said two OPEC sources, who were cited by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-opec-meeting\/opec-backs-extra-1-5-million-bpd-output-cut-if-russia-joins-in-sources-idUSKBN20S0TT\">Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brent crude futures have soared between 6-10% in the last four sessions on OPEC+ JMMC technical committee recommendation,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/markets\/saudi-urges-opec-cut-more-1-million-barrels-day-amid-virus-crisis\">which stated cuts between<\/a>&nbsp;750,000 to 1 million barrels per day are needed to stabilize prices. Demand destruction from China and aboard has been one of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/energy\/oil-heading-mid-40s-few-weeks-lack-demand-starfuels-brokerage\">most significant shocks to hit global oil markets<\/a>&nbsp;since the financial crisis a decade ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/bfm1AC4.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Reuters notes that Saudi Arabia, the largest producer in OPEC, has&nbsp;<strong>yet to win the support of Russia agreeing on the cuts.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But that didn&#8217;t stop the algos bidding oil higher&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/zh-prod-1cc738ca-7d3b-4a72-b792-20bd8d8fa069.storage.googleapis.com\/s3fs-public\/inline-images\/2020-03-05_5-07-14.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Moscow, which has worked with OPEC+ since 2016 to balance supply, has&nbsp;<strong>so far withheld its support for a reduction in output.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Russia&#8217;s energy minister left OPEC meetings in Vienna on Wednesday, expected to return on Friday for more in-depth talks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em><strong>&#8220;Our expectation is that OPEC+ will deliver a credible and coherent strategy that will take more barrels than what&#8217;s priced into the market off the table,&#8221;<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;Mitsubishi UFG&#8217;s Ehsan Khoman told Reuters.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Russia could capitulate on Friday, as it has done everything so far to drag out production cut talks.
