Specifically, our output of goods and services last financial year grew by 2%. Economists obviously see the growth of a national economy as good news \u2013 but what is it doing to the Earth?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Capitalism&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/is.muni.cz\/el\/1423\/jaro2015\/ENS242\/um\/55702407\/5_Blauwhof_-_2012_-_Overcoming_accumulation_Is_a_capitalist_steady-state_economy_possible.pdf\">demands<\/a>&nbsp;limitless economic growth, yet&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/13563467.2019.1598964\">research<\/a>&nbsp;shows that trajectory is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pursuit.unimelb.edu.au\/articles\/post-capitalism-life-within-environmental-limits\">incompatible<\/a>&nbsp;with a finite planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If capitalism is still the dominant economic system in 2050,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hup.harvard.edu\/catalog.php?isbn=9780674545038\">current trends<\/a>suggest our planetary ecosystems will be, at best, on the brink of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/royalsoc.org.au\/images\/pdf\/journal\/152-1-Turner.pdf\">collapse<\/a>. Bushfires will become&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/bushfires-have-reshaped-life-on-earth-before-they-could-do-it-again-129344\">more monstrous<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2018\/oct\/30\/humanity-wiped-out-animals-since-1970-major-report-finds\">wildlife<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-019-01448-4\">will continue to be annihilated<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As my research&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pursuit.unimelb.edu.au\/articles\/post-capitalism-life-within-environmental-limits\">has sought to demonstrate<\/a>, an adequate response to climate change, and the broader environmental crisis, will require&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/life-in-a-degrowth-economy-and-why-you-might-actually-enjoy-it-32224\">creating a post-capitalist society<\/a>&nbsp;which operates within Earth\u2019s ecological&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/347\/6223\/1259855.full\">limits<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This won\u2019t will be easy \u2013 it will be the hardest thing our species has tried to do. I\u2019m not saying capitalism hasn\u2019t produced benefits for society (although those benefits are distributed very unequally&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2018\/jan\/22\/top-1-per-cent-of-australians-own-more-wealth-than-bottom-70-per-cent-combined\">within<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jasonhickel.org\/the-divide\">between<\/a>&nbsp;nations).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And of course, some people will think even talking about the prospect is naive, or ludicrous. Historically, and across the globe, GDP and environmental impact has been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/112\/20\/6271\">closely<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/13563467.2019.1598964\">linked<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Capitalism\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/is.muni.cz\/el\/1423\/jaro2015\/ENS242\/um\/55702407\/5_Blauwhof_-_2012_-_Overcoming_accumulation_Is_a_capitalist_steady-state_economy_possible.pdf\">needs growth<\/a>.
