{"id":51278,"date":"2020-02-21T18:45:49","date_gmt":"2020-02-21T23:45:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=51278"},"modified":"2020-02-21T18:45:52","modified_gmt":"2020-02-21T23:45:52","slug":"barrels-buckets-and-bottles-adventures-in-low-water-living","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=51278","title":{"rendered":"Barrels, Buckets, and Bottles: Adventures in Low-Water Living"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/worldwaterreserve.com\/sustainable-living\/low-water-living\/\">Barrels, Buckets, and Bottles: Adventures in Low-Water Living<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/worldwaterreserve.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/water-barrels-Public-Domain-pxhere.jpg\" alt=\"water barrels \/ Public Domain \/ pxhere\" class=\"wp-image-4334\"\/><figcaption>WATER BARRELS \/ PUBLIC DOMAIN \/ PXHERE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>W<\/strong>ater is invisible to most people in developed countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We turn on the tap, and there it is.&nbsp; It\u2019s provided free in restaurants, without our even asking for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We can spend money to buy water in bottles, but in America at least, we\u2019re never far from a water fountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There have been revelations recently of lead or other contaminants in water supplies, but still the concept of a universal \u201cwater supply\u201d is rarely questioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Water for Granted<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This easy access to water is not the case in many places on earth and was almost never the case in the past.&nbsp; And it\u2019s looking like it will not be the case in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/south-africa-water-shortage-cape-town-drought-water-restrictions-patta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">future<\/a>, as sea-level rise threatens&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/article\/florida-everglades-freshwater-saltwater-sea-level-rise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fresh water<\/a>&nbsp;supplies, energy resources are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/peakoil.com\/consumption\/the-effects-of-fossil-fuel-depletion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">depleted<\/a>, political systems lack the will or ability to maintain&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2009\/US\/01\/28\/infrastructure.report.card\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">infrastructure<\/a>, and climate change creates&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nca2014.globalchange.gov\/report\/our-changing-climate\/precipitation-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unpredictable rainfall<\/a>&nbsp;and temperature patterns around the globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If our water systems collapse, or if we decide to simplify voluntarily, individuals and households may be surprised at the lifestyle changes that will be necessary.&nbsp; What we own, how we use it, and even our domestic architecture will be affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was something I had to learn during two years without running water in Liberia and seven years with erratic running water in Kyrgyzstan.&nbsp; I offer my experiences in living without reliable water sources not because I\u2019m the expert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are millions of people around the world who have managed their whole lives on a tiny fraction of the water we consider necessary.\u00a0 But perhaps I can describe to you what living with unpredictable water is like and make it less daunting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026click on the above link to read the rest of the article\u2026<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Barrels, Buckets, and Bottles: Adventures in Low-Water Living Water is invisible to most people in developed countries.
